Sega vs. YTMND

I'm suprised this hasn't been mentioned yet... unless it has and I've missed it.

Not so great news for YTMND, but it shows that Sega have downgraded themselves once again to "defend" a franchise they've practically killed.

Also in retailiation fans raided Sega of America's forums. Which is damn stupid considering the letter was from Sega of Europe.

I loved that ytmnd. But this is ridiculous.

This is actually extremely old news, considering how small the whole thing really is, and how much of a fuss everyone on YTMND is making out of it. Sega's lawsuit has no basis.

SEGA have stooped a new all time low.

...I'm surprised they aren't also suing DeviantART for having images of their copyrighted characters, ROM sites for having the old games for download, and fangamers for making and distributing games based on their characters. Jesus christ.

They went after "Sonic Stuff" a few years back as it hosted the early Sonic Advance 3 ROM. Completely missed the fact that Sonic Stuff housed pretty much ALL the 2D Sonic games then, plus prototypes. I don't think anything actually came of it though, although since that site's been inactive for about 2 years it's hard to tell.

I've never understood why companies sometimes feel the need to punish their fanbase in cases that really wouldn't hurt them to ignore.

Aren't those sites illegal? If so, couldn't Sega technically sue them for giving away their commercial products for free through illegal means?

Sega know of ROM sites just like Nintendo and dozens of other companies do. They're just too damn lazy to stop it. If they were, MFGG would probably not exist.

Actually, the big video game companies do sometimes try to shut down ROM sites. I think special tolerance is given to fangames because, even though they use characters owned by the companies, they really don't hurt the franchises that much.

This is just as stupid as someone saying, "OMIGOSH MISSION IN SNOWDRIFTLAND IS MADE BY NINTENDO OF EUROPE!"....

...what?
