I posted this project some time ago, and I've actually been working on it enough for a demo to be released! It's only of level 1-1, but it's an important milestone for me: I released a fully completed demo of a game (that's actually a decent game, not like Mario Star Quest). Return to Super Mario Bros is a game set in the universe of the original Super Mario Bros, but with a new story, levels and graphics!

Story:
In a strange twist, the Toads have joined the Koopa Army! Bowser, using aid from the Dark Toads now has the poor Princess Peach - and with her, power over the entire Mushroom Kingdom! Mario and the remaining Toads have joined to fight back and get the Dark Toads out of the power of the Koopa King. Help Mario rescue the Princess, the Dark Toads and restore peace to the Mushroom Kingdom!

Gameplay:
Exactly the same as the original Super Mario Bros - but with new features! RTSMB is filled with special blocks, fun enemies, and more! Levels are short, so don't expect too much. But there will be quite a lot of them! And another demo is coming soon.
RTSMB also has one thing many other games don't have: Mario-accurate music that doesn't make the game too big. Which means that badly sequenced MIDIs will be something you won't find at all in this game.

Role reversal! An unsuspecting Goomba bumps into Mario. How is it that Mario's boots can squash a Goomba, but the touch of a Goomba to Mario is instant death? Ouch.

The start of 1-2 as of 15/1/07. I still haven't added enemies, and I might change some stuff. And the water is transparent, so it looks more realistic.

I hope you will enjoy this game. Give me C&C on it, especially the engine. This is the first game I've made where almost everything was coded by me - the only things that weren't were the brick shards movement (by Soniro) and the pipes (coded by me, but one of the main parts to making them work was done by Xgoff).

edit2: I've reuploaded again. If you already played the old demo, don't get this, as there's nothing new. Just parallax scrolling and the new layered system. And, I've removed some unneeded stuff to make the game a bit smaller. Demo 2 is coming very soon!

edit4: REUPLOADED! For some reason, the new levels didn't show up. Fixed now!

By the way, what do the support banners mean?
Edit: Oh my god... this game is pretty good! Nice select of voices, smooth gameplay and other things! There are some problems though:
1. While I got a Mushroom, I held down the jump button, and when Mario has done growing, he made a high jump.
2. Mario is visible while entering/exiting pipes.
Other than that, this game is pretty solid!

That's very cool.

The only problem I noticed is that when he goes down a pipe, Mario is in front of the pipe rather than inside it.

Yeah, that's been giving me a lot of problems. I've fixed it (but I haven't reuploaded it, why bother for a small fix like this?).

ultramario, I made a new topic because the old one was messy and I wanted to start afresh with a new demo.

I'm not sure why the high jumping with the mushrooms happens. It's happened ever since I added them. I think it's something to do with the fact that I pause the movement (I use the Platform Movement extension) to make the mushroom growing work.
I don't think I'll try to fix it unless someone knows how, as it's a minor problem. I will just design my levels so it doesn't cause much of a problem.
Other bugs I know about that I won't fix because they don't affect gameplay much:
You can duck+jump into a block and rise up onto the top of it
You can get stuck in a hidden block (I'll probably fix this one)

Feedback: The game is awesome! I love the Mario voices and the fact that you used some of the Super Mario World features. Awesome, SMW is my favorite mario game. Nothing's wrong with it so far!

This is 1-2. Can you tell how it's not finished? I've been busy preparing tilesets and getting the BG to fit for this level, so I haven't done too much of the level design.
The background is from Super Mario War (filename Underground_RockWallAndPlantsDark.png). If someone can tell me who to give credit to for ripping it, I will do so.
I hope to post a lot of screenshots of this game. Maybe even, on days when I do a lot of designing, one screenshot every day!

More bugs found. sad.gif
If the Mario dead pose is on the screen when you lose a life, press the jump button. The jump sound appears.
Sometimes, Mario goes trough a brick (Maybe because touching the brick will standing with the back facing it.)! soveryhappy.gif
Sometimes, when I touch the Koopa shell while not moving, you get hurt.
And for some reason, while Super Mario, he ducked for no reason.
Put a sound for when you hit a brick while normal Mario.

What do you mean by "touching the brick will standing with the back facing it"?
I've fixed two glitches already: The jump sound appearing when you die (also, it happened when you were in a pipe too - I fixed this). And now also, I removed the mushroom glitch that lets you jump really high. I'm also going to fix going through blocks by ducking and jumping.

Just jump at the 4 row blocks at the start of the level.
Or touch a brick while the brick is facing Mario's back in the air.
Add some music.
Make so that Mario can move while ducking and jumping straight.
And while normal Mario, find a ducking sprite (There are somewhere. wink.gif).
Edit: Will you make a Cut-Scene that represents the story?

I'm not going to add ducking for normal Mario. It doesn't make sense and it wastes time I could use adding other stuff.
I managed to do the brick glitch with Small Mario. I can't fix it, but I'm going to add a code so that if you are stuck in a block, you are pushed out of the bottom. I have this for backdrops, but not for active objects (all blocks have to be active objects).
I have music already. Don't you hear it?
I will release an update to this demo soon. No new levels yet, but bug fixes like this.
Also, I have made it harder to get hurt by a koopa shell when you kick it. It still happens sometimes, but I've tried my best to stop it.
Also, just because my game has a few glitches isn't bad. It's a fangame, not an official Nintendo produced game made by programmers who get paid lots of money to do it.

Also, I've added note blocks.

edit: I saw what you edited. Maybe I'll add a cutscene later. It's hard though because I'm not very good at editing sprites, but I'll try.

edit2: Ahh! I just tried the EXE file and I see why you say there's no music. For some reason, even though I tell it it should, the music files aren't added into the game file even though I want it to.

I'm almost ready to update the demo with bugfixes. I still need to fix a few things, but nearly every glitch people have mentioned here is fixed!
Here's a list of stuff that's fixed:
Music works properly - but it means you have to unzip everything before playing it, you can't just run it from the zip file. I have an idea for fixing this, but I'm not sure if it will work too well. I might use it.
Koopa shells don't hurt you when you kick them - it still happens sometimes, but it happens less.
If you're small mario, you can't get stuck in a brick.
Ducking and jumping into a block will push you out. It doesn't work exactly like in real mario games, but it works well enough.
Holding down the jump button when you get a powerup doesn't make you jump extremely high.
All layering problems have been fixed. This means Mario goes in pipes and not in front of them!

Also, have you found the bonus room?
