Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
Need I say more?

I honestly thought it was going to work this way

sonic & Knuckles style / Gameshark style

I remember seeing on a website that at some e3 event or e3-ish event (Might have been ECTS or something?) They had Banjo Tooie Demo's but they were unlabled cartridges where a cartidge would go in the top or something

then the site it was on (I think it was tendobox.com, though its now defunct and reroutes you to 1up or something like that) they had a mock-up picture of the banjo tooie cartridge which looked pretty convincing.

I was stoked that I would be able to put my banjo tooie cartridge in the top and be able to visit the old areas as well as the new ones making one huge game, but alas when it came out it had no connectors to the top and what they did to make up for lack of stop & swop/sonic & knuckles was very lame, the whole busting banjo kazooie cartridges for only 3 eggs or whatever it was.. though banjo tooie was a huge game i guess it made up for it, i mean the game is hugge

Do you have any idea how much it costs to make cartridges like that?

And since it's a second party developer rather than a first party making the game, Nintendo would have to produce them, and Rare would have to pay Nintendo to do so.

And Banjo Kazooie wasn't half as well known as Sonic was, so Nintendo probably wouldn't allow it (At least for Banjo, but if given the chance they might have for Mario or Zelda).
