QUOTE
GameSpy, a unit of Fox Interactive Media, announced today that it will provide multiplayer technology to game publishers developing titles for Nintendo’s Wii™ video game system. As part of an ongoing partnership with Nintendo, GameSpy has developed middleware technology to enable Wii titles to offer community features, such as friend rosters, advanced matchmaking capabilities and comprehensive rankings data.

“This partnership will expand our wireless community of players on Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “Millions of Nintendo DS users have already logged on using GameSpy’s technology, and now Wii owners will be able to do the same in a fun and easy-to-use environment.”

“Nintendo has been an invaluable partner and we look forward to expanding our relationship with them in the future,” said Jamie Berger, Senior Vice President of Consumer Products and Technology for IGN Entertainment. “Our goal is to extend our ground-breaking work on the Nintendo DS to provide Wii users with the social, community and multiplayer tools that we believe will expand the online gaming experience to the mass market.”

Pokémon® Battle Revolution, the first Wii game to utilize the technology, launches on June 25, with multiplayer features similar to those leveraging GameSpy technology in several Nintendo DS titles.

Prior to this development agreement for Wii, GameSpy and Nintendo brought gamers wireless community options for Nintendo DS™. The service provided an innovative network for portable video games, allowing people around the world to link easily and wirelessly to play games. The partnership represented GameSpy’s first foray into portable games.

Wait, does this mean the end of the friends code bullcrap or is that encoded into the Wii's DNA at this point?

Didn't they promise this for the DS a while back, too?

Gamespy always has stable servers and good searching capabilities, so this can't be a bad thing.

chill.. hopefully the friend code thing is for that pokemon game only because of the DS connectivity or something.. it could be the same technology but use your wii address as the friend code for most if not all games (except pokemon) instead of individual codes for each game

I don't see a problem with the friend code system. In fact, it's a lot more secure because it's console based instead of password based. Besides, if the Wii can get on the internet competently, I'm sure playing a game won't be a problem.

Here's flaming proof that the Wii is going to use the crappy friend code system: http://www.britishgaming.co.uk/?p=1786

QUOTE
Falafelkid: I would like to know if I am right in assuming that the features mentioned (friend rosters, advanced matchmaking capabilities and comprehensive rankings data) suggest a single, unified online platform for each console, rather than one which is dependent on individual games (as is the case with the DS).

GameSpy: GameSpy’s technology does allow for features that could span multiple games. With the Nintendo Wii, however, the multiplayer features are title-specific.

Falafelkid: But is that the case for all Wii online titles across the board?

GameSpy: Yes, that is the case for Wii titles.

Falafelkid: Just one last question to make absolutely sure I have got this right, please. If I have a friend roster in one game, that roster will not be available to me in any other game. I have to build up an entirely new list for each title, right?

GameSpy: The answer to your question is yes, for the Wii friend lists are game specific.

Why do they have to do this when they have the capability to do it how it should be? At least with DS there was an excuse, there was like next to nothing for hard memory in the system itself (besides like clock, firmware settings and wifi router settings) but the wii? The wii uses 1 single friend code (your wii address) to do BOTH mii and messaging, so WHY CANT YOU USE THE ONE SINGLE CODE FOR EVERY GAME

do they have any idea how many people they're pissing off? What if you have like over 15 people that you want to constantly play games with and stuff, it could be such a freaking hassle for each individual person to get each others code, and typing them all in for each game is like putting in some horrible 20 digit game shark code

Actualy on the DS If your playing against a friend there friends can join...

I'm assuming this will be the same on the Wii.

Actually, that's being wildly misinterpreted. While it makes me groan that we may have to punch in multiple codes again, that interview (if it can even be 100% trusted) merely reveals that there may be separate friend lists for each game where you pick and choose from your address book.

I hope so. Typing in codes with the stylus with easy but with the wiimote it can be a chore for trigger happy jittery hands like myself.

Well, pray they implement d-pad Friend Code entry or reconsider their course of action altogether:

QUOTE
I can confirm that the Friend Code system in the Wi-Fi Connection (WFC) service for Wii will be the same as it was for the Nintendo DS, meaning game-specific Friend Codes and a separate Friend Roster are used in each game where players can play with identified friends. As with Nintendo DS, the system was created to ensure the gaming environment is kept fun for everyone.

We have heard from various others like you letting us know how they felt regarding Nintendo’s implementation of Friend Codes in the Wi-Fi Connection service for Wii. I want you to know that we appreciate your passion and concern. Let me assure you that your concerns have been heard and will be forwarded along. As always, keep an eye on our website (www.nintendo.com) for the latest developments in Wi-Fi gaming as they are made available.

fun for everyone? more like fun for mindless complaining parents who will probrably still complain when most games probrably wont have any chatting function. oooooh how's your kid gonna get raped this time? Is he going to spell his address by moving his character around in the shape of letters?

I've played online games... and listening to other people is not a very enjoyable experience (but it can be funny at times.)

Really, its just an extra step. I'll take limited online functionality over nothing at all and it would be good for you all to do the same.
