After over 3 years of wanting the game back, I finally ask another one of my friends if I could borrow his just last weekend. He said I could keep it, so yeah. I just beat it 5 minutes ago (30 if you count be goofing off after beating it and the friggin long ending), I clocked in about 37 hours into the game. Keep in mind I didn't rush through the storyline and I did alot of sidequests during the main storyline, so it probably took me about 25-30 hours to beat the main story. Here's what I thought of the experience. Firstly, the gameplay. This is one of the only turn based RPGs that I actually have fun playing. Much like Paper Mario 1, the battles are interactive (For turnbased standards atleast), as in rather than just picking an attack and watching you character do thi whole big preformance, you actually have to have skill in button mashing, timing, speed and more. I like this style of gameplay, it makes the game that much more fun. Outside of the turnbased battles, there's also some platforming elements that no true Mario title could go without. They're fun little reminders that this is a Mario game. There's also other things to keep you busy lie cooking, sidequests, the Pit of 100 Trials, Glitzpitz, and more. Now onto the story. The story and dialouge in this game is fantastic, it ranges from funny, to serious and even downright tearstricken. Nintendo did a remarkable job at dealing both comic relief and a serious story at the same time. Though sometimes I think the humor was a bit overdone, and I didn't necessarily like seeing Bowser portrayed as a bumbling idiot, but it was welldone overall. My favorite part of the game was: Spoilers: | My favorite scene in the whole game has got to be near the end, when Bowser falls through the roof and crushes Grodus. It's obvious they only made Bowser one of the final bosses for the sake of an service, but it worked and the scene was funny and memorible. |
The graphics, while not exactly pushing the GameCube at all, are very nice looking and give the game a uniqe look. I personally really like the art style, but sometimes I just can't help but think that the only reason they went for this artstyle was so they didn't have to focus on graphics that much. But as long as it's nice looking I guess I'm happy. Also, for a game titled "Paper Mario", there really arn't alot of paper effects. Sure, all the characters are paper, the bosses look like paper mache' and there are other little paper gimmicks here and there, games like Yoshi's story captured the storybook feel much better than this game. It might as wel be called Sprite Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Overall, I'd give it a 9/10. Some probably would say that's a bit too high, but I really enjoyed this game, and would be bold enough to claim it as my favorite Mario game of all time. Yes, I played and beat all the big games (aka all the platformers and RPGs), with the first Mario RPG being the exception. I only got to play it on my friend's PSP for a few minutes, and it lagged like hell.

PM:TTYD is one of if not my favorite Mario title ever. If you know anthing about my recent fangames, it should be really obvious why. But, Bowser isn't the only thing I like about this game. I normally hate RPGs. I just don't like 'em. I don't even like M&L that much. But there's enough Mario-y elements to this game that I just love it. Though, since Super Paper Mario is more of a platformer than an RPG, and Bowser is still playable and silly, I think it stands a good shot of replacing this one as my favorite! EDIT: Though, true, I do admit that I haven't completed the final boss or the Pit of 100 trials as of this point. This post has been edited by Toodles Team on Mar 17 2007, 09:43 AM
