Well even if we did add that, it makes no sense to have the search option but no search bar.

If anything, both.

That would go to a searching redicle.

This is already ridiculous. I see no point in adding another section to the sidebar, as a general rule of web design you want to keep the sidebars fairly short (unless you obviously cannot due to having a lot of content). It keeps things better organized.

Having one search bar is a lot less cumbersome, in my opinion, than adding whole new sections to the sidebar. And if you're going to be downloading files, you'll be in the file section ANYWAY, so you can search there. It's convenient.

What are you talking about? cool.gif

The whole point is that having all space taken up at the top of every page for a search is downright ugly, cluttered, not to mention annoying. It might work for google.com but it just doesn't work for the site.

Read the rest of my post, I added some other things.

And the "This is ridiculous" comment is referring to how this is turning into a huge argument and how you're resorting to adding new sections to the sidebar to avoid having a search bar. Makes no sense to me. Adding a WHOLE NEW SECTION is less cumbersome than adding a small bar at the top? O_o

Besides, for practical arguement, it'd take less bandwidth. All we're doing is moving the bar. Also keep in mind this is a beta.

Right, and the only reason the bar would be moved to the top would be for increased visibility. Like I said earlier, if you have to go down to the BOTTOM of the page to search, what's the point? I didn't even find the search feature until I scrolled through the file list, and by that point I was like "Well, I just looked through the whole list, wish I knew we had this feature".

The whole point is that on the top of each of the tables, it looks just terrible. Totally unappealing. I don't care how useful or not useful it ends up being, but it's looks terrible. And there's other ways to get around it.

No, it's just the fact that you state your opinions as if they're the be-all-end-all of the discussion.

"The search bar looks terrible"
"It just does not work for the site"

It's fine that you think that, but plz don't go around saying that as if you're the only one who thinks so. Other people think it looks good. And I'm sure there's other people who agree with you, but I'm not stating my opinions as facts and nobody else should either.

Also, I'd appreciate some constructive criticism apart from "It just looks ugly". Why's it so terrible to have the search bar at the top?

I want to hear opinions good and bad, but as a site admin I'm telling you that I'm not willing to make an entirely new page for a search feature. Some other admin might, though.

Well myself, I'm very passionate about presentation and appeal. If there's something that kills the layout of a site or takes away from the pattern, I don't like it.
EDIT: Unless of course it's immensely useful

The thing here is that it IS useful. To be honest, I never even knew the search existed when it was on the bottom. Second I loaded the page with it on top, I saw it. I don't see how it destroys the pattern at all.
