QUOTE (CloakBass @ Apr 29 2007, 12:31 PM)
I also don't really see much evidence that Nintendo hates what Rare had done with DKC. Hell, they still use a bunch of characters Rare created and even let them have a crack at Diddy Kong Racing again.

Spoilers:
DKU4LIF

I think Shiggy's said in the past how he didn't like what Rare did with Donkey Kong after the release of Donkey Kong Country. In fact, that might have been why Donkey Kong isn't a main playable character in DKC2 or 3 (Although that's just a theory). You only have to look at things like Mario Tennis 64 and Mario Kart 64 to see how screechy and annoying DK is when given to Nintendo, whereas Donkey Kong 64 had him much better. Clearly they weren't happy with what Rare did or they would have made him more similar, and dropped DKJr out completely.

They've obviously changed it a lot since the SNES days for whatever reason but there's still no real sequel to DK64 or the DKC series, just spin-offs, which, although are cool, sorta suggest that they're not quite sure what they want to do with the franchise. I think this is probably down to the fact the Rare Donkey Kong games always copied the Mario games of that era to some degree. They probably want to make them different but aren't sure how, and I'm not sure why since it worked prefectly fine regardless. Maybe they fear that because 3D rendered sprites are a thing of the past now, any DK platformer will just be repeating the same formula that's been demonstrated since the dawn of 3D, and not adding anything "new" which is what Nintendo seem to aim for nowadays.

Miyamoto's quote was that "Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good.", which he later apologized for, claiming he had been too harsh due to being pressured at the time to make Yoshi's Island more like DKC. It doesn't necessarily mean he hates what Rare did with the franchise, but somehow I don't think he pictures the Rare DK's personality when he thinks of the "Donkey Kong" name.

Mario Tennis was made by Camelot, and it seemed they got it down better in Power Tennis (DK Jr. was gone, Diddy was in, etc.) Mario Kart 64 honestly didn't seem to have him that bad. Jungle Beat (EAD Tokyo) and the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong games (NST) were possibly the worst offenders though.

I'm not even sure I want a DKC4 if Rare isn't going to develop it.
That being stated, I wouldn't mind if another developer (Probably Paon, if anyone) took on a platformer that respected what was established in the DKCs.

I loved King of Swing and respect what PAON does to the DK series. If anyone was going to take Rare's place as caretaker of the DKC franchise, I'd want it to be them.

Oh, how I wish we could get a platformer made by PAON.

Although, Rare is still able to make DS games for Nintendo, so who's to say that DKC4 is impossible?

New Kong added to the playability roster!

Lanky Kong
shows up for the first time since DK64 (not counting DKC port minigames)!

This game has convinced me to get a Wii with my next paycheck.

Ha ha, awesome. Glad to see another character from...that character's debut game... make a comeback. If they've added him in, maybe they're still hope for Krunch yet.

A Minecart, a tobaggon, a very DKC-ish looking snow area, Zingers, Rambi in a scene similar to the Donkey Kong Racing video...holy crap.

From the little counter it looks as though riding on Enguarde is only temporary. I wouldn't be suprised if it's a similar thing with Rambi.
