No... Wii runs everything encrypted and it would be hard to make a Action Replay for it. Still, Action Replay is good for accessing debug menu in SSBM, maybe even things like play the game at faster speed or invisible character or stuff. Maybe even disable music, so that you can record the sound effects. (I have done that with SuperMarioLand 1 on my computer.) Of course, if you can open it up and change things without risking to damage it too much, I might consider it but I don't know how it help to do such things. With Nintendo DS I can replace the firmware with my own (FWNITRO) without opening it up at all, except for the batter compartment.

The same applies for the DS, but we still got our DS AR.

Wrong. Wireless multiboot applications (like downloadable demos and single-card multiplayer) are encrypted with RSA; that was defeated using a firmware replacement that lets unsigned code run. The DS Action Replay is really a Slot-1 homebrew solution.

And a firmware replacement won't do you any good on the Wii; even if you disable firmware updating, new games will come pre-packed with the upgrades and force you to install them (Super Paper Mario is an example of this).

Firmware 2.0 for whatever region you bought it in. If your firmware is older than that, it gets automatically installed.

(In Nintendo DS the beginning part of the firmware cannot be written without opening the battery compartment.) For Nintendo Wii, you may be able to add an extra firmware chip and switch between them with a switch. Even if you could write your own firmware on Nintendo Wii, you would need to access the decryption key so that you can decrypt the encrypted game DVDs.

Anyone who thinks that Action Replay is just for cheating to get through the game doesn't know anything about programming. Hidden secrets are unlocked through Action Replay that you most likely will not encounter at any time during the game. Like debug menus and other cool things.

what good is a debug menu anyway? why is it so cool...I can't understand it myself

Indeed. That's the current holy grail of Wii hacking. But consumers of the Action Replay aren't always consumers of modchips. You need the private (aka encryption) key to make something that all users can benefit from.

Yes the new firmware chip would be a kind of modchip, but you need to add a switch if you want to be able to access the old firmware as well. (Maybe the encryption key is at a BIOS level, as it is in Nintendo DS. But Nintendo DS uses symmetric encryption for the game cards, which is easier to crack than the RSA used for DS download play, and I don't know if the RSA public key is in the BIOS. The Wii does not seem to use symmetric encryption.)

The Wii most likely uses asymmetric. Also, the key might be at a lower level than the firmware and/or BIOS (the Xbox has its key in the CPU, literally)

Yes, I think so. They will let you run homebrew GameCube software and backups of licensed Wii software, but they don't let you run homebrew Wii software. But you can run homebrew GameCube software anyways using Action Replay on GameCube and a SD card adapter to plug a SD card to the GameCube memory cards slots.
