QUOTE
Iraq's sectarian warfare fueled a sharp increase in global terrorism in 2006, the U.S. State Department reported Monday.

The total number of terrorist attacks was up more than 25 percent from the previous year, according to the State Department's annual report on global terrorism.

Incidents in Iraq accounted for nearly half of the 14,000 attacks and about two-thirds of the more than 20,000 fatalities worldwide. The number of deaths blamed on attacks increased by about 40 percent.

The spike comes from the eruption of sectarian killings and bombings that followed the February 2006 bombing of the al-Askariya mosque in the Iraqi city of Samarra, according to Frank Urbancic, the State Department's acting counterterrorism coordinator.

That attack, blamed on al Qaeda in Iraq, destroyed a revered Shiite Muslim shrine and led to a wave of reprisals between Iraq's Sunni and Shiite communities.

The number of people killed in terrorist attacks in Iraq rose from 8,262 in 2005 to 13,340 last year, said Russell Travers, deputy director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Are we any safer?

It seems crazy to me how people will blow themselves up like that.
Well, Europe is at least safer:
QUOTE
Despite the overall increase in international terrorism, there were some successes in the past year, the report indicated.

The plot to bomb trans-Atlantic airliners last year was foiled, and no major terrorist attacks occurred in Europe in 2006.

The total number of attacks declined in Indonesia, Pakistan and India, despite attacks on commuter trains in the Indian city of Mumbai that killed more than 200 people in July.

So, we should sit back and take all the crap they throw at us? There is a breaking point. I know that the American people are getting impatient with the war in Iraq, and I see something like Vietnam happening (where we lose so much support at home to the point where we are forced to pull back). Am I right?

I remember the thing in Denmark! That was funny, the Muslims there protested peacefully and stuff against the Prophet Mohammad Cartoons, but in the Middle East it was REALLY serious, they boycotted Danish products and said that Denmark could be a target of terrorist organizations.

Don't kill me for saying this.... But... Religion is the reason why we have war, and has been for thousands of years <_<

@LuigiFan: Wanna bet it'll be longer than WWII?

@Chrismonster: Don't worry, you don't get killed for that. But it is a very stupid thing to fight over, right? Killing hundreds of innocents just because they don't believe in the same things as you do. It's alright to believe whatever you want to believe in, it's just when you force others to think the same way when things go awry.

Christians should just accept that not everyone wants to follow the word of Jesus.

Muslims should just accept that not everyone wants to follow the word of Mohammed.

If they did that, the world would be a better place to live in.

Wrong.

For just two examples, the Civil War and World War II were not caused by religion. The Civil War came about because of the Southerners' ownership of slaves (not religion-related), and the North's refusal to let the Southerners secede (again, needless to say, not religion-related). As for World War II, nobody can seriously say that the Nazis were religious. And if someone should say, "Well, the Jews Hitler hated were religious, so religion was the underlying reason," that's just as ridiculous as saying of the Roman persecution of Christians, "The Christians shouldn't have been religious so that none of this strife would have happened!"

Blaming religion for the ills of this world is not only illogical, but tends to make people look insecure and at least at times even anti-moral. It's possible to be atheist/agnostic and not attack religion without good reason. :/

Religion itself is not the cause of war.
It's the fact that people can't ****ing accept other peoples religions and cultures that we have war.

Atheism is in itself a sort of religion. War is never going to end.

QUOTE
Unconfirmed reports that al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri has been killed come from local tribes and not Iraq's intelligence services or military, an Iraqi government spokesman said Tuesday.

Ali al-Dabbagh, spokesman for Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, said the government won't be able to confirm al-Masri's death until it makes an identification of the body.

"Iraqi security forces do not have the body," al-Dabbagh said on Iraqi state TV. "Iraqi security forces and Multi-National Forces are trying to retrieve the body for visual identification and DNA tests." (Watch how mostly Sunni tribes reportedly were fighting against al Qaeda in Iraq )

Al-Masri -- also known as Sheikh Abu Hamza al-Muhajer -- succeeded Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq after his death in a U.S. airstrike in June.

The Al Qaeda leader of Iraq may be dead.
