I'm sure it's possible somehow, because most things are, but does anyone know a way to make, say, a circle object that, when overlapping sprites, makes the areas that are overlapped not show (Showing the background instead)? The object itself could still be there, as long as the background is displayed.
OK, so maybe that isn't possible, but I figured it's better to ask and know than not to. And if it is possible, I could use it in something.
Thanks.

Actually, the idea was for a Worms-style game, with a certain object that you can walk through, but shows the background, instead of actually destroying selected areas (which I'm pretty sure is impossible using Game Maker). There've been other ways of doing it that I've read talked about, but most supposedly run slowly on a lot of computers, so I was hoping that someone would know how to make an object show the background. Unfortunately, I guess it can't be done. A solid-color background isn't bad, of course, so I think I'll probably end up using that. Thanks, though. No, sorry, I don't have anything before 6.1 on my computer, so I couldn't use it. But from what I understood, you were just using the views to look through something, while I was hoping for some sort of collision detection.
However, what you mentioned about the views is actually pretty smart, and I think I have a way for you to even use circles or shapes for that sort of thing. If you put a sprite with a transparent center on the view used to look through something, and set its x and y to view_x and view_y in the step event, you could have a non-rectangular border. Of course, it wouldn't match to its surroundings, but it could be used for a telescope or something.
Anyways, I found an alternative. It's a little bit laggy, but it works. Thanks for all the help, though. I could probably use that view trick another time.
