in short: 1) your calendar doesn't say 2004 anymore, now does it; 2) use some common sense here

He means NEXT gen.

Now that all the "next-gen" consoles are out, Wii, 360, and PS3 are the new current gen.

He simply wants to discuss what may come after Wii. No need to grill him >>

The hell if I should know, as far as we know this could be the last gen for Nintendo period. Barring of course the variations of the same console that will undoubtedly be released over time.

I doubt this will be Nintendo's final console, the Wii is selling like hotcakes.

If your asking if the Wii will be backwards compatible with Ninies next system, then the answer is no.

so did the n64 out of the gate and look how that went (and don't go "LOL 30 MILLION VS 100 MILLION, STILL A LOT!"; that's still a ton of market share from the snes days pissed away and the trend is gonna be hard to buck whether ign says so or not)

If he means that the Wii will not be forward-compatible with Nintendo's next system, then I agree. It's a fair assumption, and one supported by evidence.
No console has ever been forward-compatible with the system that succeeded it and the games it will use.

Good lord, give us a chance to still be able to grasp the current-gen. Most of us still don't have the ability to obtain a console of this gen yet, except for the 360.

My guess if anything, the next system will just be a more techincally advanced Wii... Wii 2.0 or something.

Precisely the point. So perhaps Nintendo will start pushing sales with software instead of hardware.

Yes, that is good idea. But you should make software for non-DRM system as well.

I hope so. If nintendo just switched the button lay out on their new Wii or whatever there going to make. And has rechargeable batteries built in with HD (its confirmed) then probably. Nintendos probably thinking about the system right now, so they'll come up with something.

Well from what I've observed

NES - Something totally new
SNES - Upgraded NES
N64 - Something totally new
Gamecube - Upgraded N64
Wii - Something totally new
Next gen - ____________

Fill in the blank. I figure it will be similar to the Wii. But even if it is totally different, it can still be backwards compatible (like Wii was for GCN, though they're aren't too similar of systems).
