I think once the sprites are accepted it would be counter productive to remove them. Just keep higher standards in mind when accepting new sprites.

I wouldn't mind going through and getting rid of ****ty sheets. But I'll have to make a list later.
Also, we seriously need a redundancy rule. I've had this in my head for a long time and it seems we need it now.

And this, I liked it, because it really felt like out of a NES game, with the SMB colors and all, rather than a useless edit.

Not on a massive scale as has been suggested. And it would turn quite a few people away from the site so that you're not getting any submissions from them at all. I'd sure be pissed if one of my submissions was removed after it was accepted because two of the site maintainers weren't paying attention to what they were doing.

And if you're going to remove all those sprites, you need to remove all of the horrible quality games and stuff from old times. Regardless of whether or not they are classic. It's awfully silly to expect quality submissions when your greatest examples of classic games being Paper Mario World.

Then maybe we need more mods and three votes to add/remove a submission instead of two?

Here's an example I pulled off the unmodded site just now to show an example.
user posted image

Not only is this downright fugly, it's a cheap and poor edit of Bowser from SMB.
This is an example of an 8-bit sheet I would decline.

I thought I should also mention this.

In the comments on this submission, Super Goombario (now banned) and themagicalgamer posted comments saying that submissions can't be "bad" if they've been accepted. This attitude I feel is unreasonable, and works against proper judgment and criticism. I'm not denying for a moment that the staff do their job very well, but everyone makes mistakes sometimes. I just feel that the sort of attitude exhibited in those two comments will discourage people from saying what needs to be said about submissions that may not be up to snuff.

(Note: I am not complaining in this post about the quality of the sheet I linked to - I linked to it for the purpose of discussing those comments. The enemies on it are useless in my opinion, as well as being absurdly easy-looking to make, and there's too much space devoted to the maker's signature, but the tiles on the sheet are good. I already said what I thought was not good about the sheet in the comments on that page anyway.)

Also, I agree with what Marty said about the 8-bit sheets. Some people just seem to be submitting those because it takes relatively little effort to recolor an enemy to fewer colors like that and because the sheets tend to get accepted a lot. Also people almost never use 8-bit sprites in games (with a few exceptions, such as flipiberke's You vs. Boo game, though I don't remember if that contains regular enemies or not).

No, it is not. Submissions that were accepted are supposed to be quality and the maintainers are SUPPOSED to ensure that. I don't get how a flood of submissions really justifies such quality being overlooked, Elly!

And it's not just one person who isn't doing their job, that's what's worse. It's two people that accepted such poor quality submissions. No offense to the maintainers, nothing against you guys personally. But the standards on the site depend on your guidance.

I always wondered how this got accepted. Problems with Game Maker files on the staff's part I'd guess, but eh.

You may have misunderstood my post.

What I was saying is that I feel it's unreasonable to hold that just because something was accepted, that means it's OK - and above any major criticism. That's what those two comments seemed to be saying, unless I was missing something.

EDIT: @Neopolis: Good God. I agree for sure. X_X

If we removed those crappy spritesheets, people wouldn't act so negative and constantly make rude comments.

Considering MFGG's current growth trend is costing me a lot of money, I think we could afford beating it back down a bit.

Here's my feeling on submissions. MFGG is a fangaming site. The primary purpose is letting game makers display their fangames, and get feedback on them. The actual quality of the games is somewhat less relevant.

Sprites, sounds, etc are auxiliary offerings. Their purpose is to aid fangames - and as such their quality is more important in supporting that. What MFGG has turned into is a competition to get as many sprite sheets accepted as possible, and if the crappy ones sneak by, all the merrier.

Frankly I think the best way to address it is to designate a week towards sifting through all the site files, retagging them as needed, finding all the duplicate sheets for which better ones already exist on the site, and finding all the unreasonably crappy ones, and removing them. And at the same time, making any needed changes to the submission guidelines, UI, and modding.

Would you like ordinary members to help with seeking out duplicate sheets and perhaps with seeking out bad ones, or would you prefer to have that left up to the staff only? Just curious.

EVERYBODY POST THE CRAPPY SUBMISSIONS

I wouldn't mind bringing the community in on it. But, this is all just my thoughts so far so it would have to be fully discussed with the rest of the staff first.
