Spoiler Free Review: Ever since I was a kid, I've loved Pirates of the Caribbean. And I'm talking about the ride here. Way before 2003, before Johnny Depp stepped into those drunken wobbly shoes that are Captain Jack and before the pirate genre was reimagined. Now here I stand at what is supposedly the end, however unlikely that is. It’s been four years since I first saw Jack and I’m going to miss him. Pirate fever has been taking over; the ride that started it all has been revamped and effectively ruined in my opinion. Not because the characters changed it, but because the popularity has changed the ride experience all together. Instead of taking a ride through a pirate adventure, you’ll be stuck with crying kids and camera flashes left and right. It’s not about seeing pirates anymore; it’s about seeing Johnny Depp. Maybe I’m just getting too old, or maybe I’m just not that little kid who loves everything he sees, but at least I’ve still got the movies. This summer’s movies have all been about the 3s. With Spiderman 3 and Shrek 3 already out with less then stellar scores, it’s time to see if Pirates can break the curse. No pun intended. Every one of those movies had a sequel that outdid the original, and personally I feel that way about pirates. But the third time has not been the charm so far, but rather the bottom of the bin and I’m sorry to say that this streak will not end here. When we left off last summer, we were shocked at old faces, new villains, and lost without a captain. So how do you continue one of the greatest cliff hangers of all time? This time we’re treated to a creepy montage of pirates meeting their fate, even the little ones. Soon we’re taken to the world’s eastern edge in Singapore where the movie starts out fast. There’s been a bit of a gap between movies and now it appears the gang is after charts to locate the end of the world. Clever humor the series is known for and fantastic action sequences start off this movie nicely. It’s when certain plot twists that things start to go awry. The visuals are fantastic and some of the scenes are simply breath taking. It's nice to see a ride cameo, even if it is only audio. But soon characters are killed off, in what seems to be an attempt to dodge finishing their stories. A questionable storyline and lame cameo appearences start the end. After all the talking is done we're treated to one of the best ending scenes in movie history. The special effects are amazing, and the whole scene was stunning and a modern masterpiece. The fight features an odd change of pace but soon regains it's footing. The ending was predictible but still great movie making. The ending of the movie comes up a bit short and leaves you a bit empty, but who knows it may point to Pirates 4. Overall the film was good, but lacked the sense of humor of the first two. It also seemed to lack the action of the second with only one super duty scene. With several characters aimlessly killed off you’ll feel a bit disappointed. And Jack gets way too little screen time versus Elizabeth who gets too much. The acting and visuals were awesome as usual and basicly, it's just a thrill ride that everyone needs to go on. There’s been a bit of a gap between movies and now it appears the gang is after charts to locate the end of the world. Clever humor the series is known for and fantastic action sequences start off this movie nicely. It’s when “betrayal” after “betrayal” that things start to go awry. After this we’re treated to the crew’s journey to the end of the world with some fantastic effects and camera shots. Again, very visually pleasing. Except for toes breaking off… And all this time, no Jack in sight. After the crew takes the plunge over the edge (With some ride sounds) we finally meet Jack and his friends in his weirdest entrance yet. Soon it becomes clear Jack has lost it. This whole scene is just plain weird and while I liked it, it seemed very out of place. Once he meets the crew you start to wonder what the hell is going on. We soon find that Elizabeth’s dad is dead after a very brief screen time. Then a really crappy transition / though cool trip up to the service. When landing on an island for no real reason, the crew happens to magically land upon the Kraken, which is found dead. This is it’s only appearance. Another death mindlessly pushed in. After some very, VERY, confusing “betrayals” on board we somehow get to Sao Feng being killed. Another rushed death, though not as bad as the others. But by this time you’re simply wondering what the hell is going on. The plot is so confusing this movie will require several viewings. Then suddenly Norrington is killed over nothing. A major character killed for no real reason. This was the most disappointing part of the movie for me. Eventually we work our way to the grand showdown, seeing Davy Jones as a human in a cool scene. We meet the Brotherhood and the newly elected pirate king, Elizabeth Swann who clearly deserved it. <_< We also meet Keith Richards in a cameo role as Jack Sparrow’s father. For those who don’t know, Richards was the basis for Jack Sparrow according to Depp. But you would have never guessed that with the dry performance he gave. No running around for him, just acting like a rock. But I guess I understand since apparently he was drunk was filming. Finally we get to the showdown in one of the best ending scenes in movie history. The special effects are amazing, and the whole scene was stunning and a modern masterpiece. For some reason Calypso is released causing nothing more then a whirlpool. During the battle Will and Elizabeth are married for some reason. (Probably due to the fact that they have sex later, and you can’t have sex if you’re not married. – Disney) Then Will is killed and predictably made the captain of the Flying Dutchman. I have to say Davy Jone’s death was too quick for such a badass. Though Mr. Mercer’s death was awesome. After it’s all said and done the pirates, though only the real pirates since the pirates lords do nothing in the film, go ape**** on Beckett’s ship. His death is also really cool when slowed down. Finally we come to the close of this three hour trip. Jack is abandoned once again by his own crew (Who for some reason don’t turn back ethier) and leaves in the dinky boat we first found him in to find the fountain of youth. Will and Elizabeth have a son named Will Jr. and visit each other once a decade. Overall the film was good, but lacked the sense of humor of the first two. It also seemed to lack the action of the second with only one super duty scene. With several characters aimlessly killed off you’ll feel a bit disappointed. And Jack gets way too little screen time versus Elizabeth who gets too much. With slow gags such as multiple Jacks throughout the film, it feels thin at parts. The ending was so-so but unexpected, it’ll be interesting how the future sequels will work. But what the film did have was fantastic and is still a must watch. Go see it, it’s a hell of a ride. |
 | QUOTE | Davy Jones: Ha ha... Lookie here boys. The lost bird. A lost bird that never learned to fly. Jack Sparrow: To my great regret. But, it's never too late to learn! |
