Never played it because I don't give into Nintendo crappy money making Mario schemes, and I can't imagine Waluigi doing anything THAT bad in a dancing video game.

SEGA's mass of characters in and of itself isn't a problem.

It's the fact that SEGA is absolutely horrid at using any of their characters. Half of them have backstories that span five minutes or absolutely no backstory at all. This applies as much to old characters as to newer ones. This effectively means that with each game SEGA / SonicTeam throws out, along with the generally stale gameplay come characters that spring out of absolutely nowhere and side with or against Sonic for absolutely no longterm reason. Without good gameplay and without good story, what do Sonic games have nowadays? Really only the music is up to scratch now and even that isn't all that good

Crappy Backstory
Anybody not listed in the other two lists

No Backstory
Sonic
Amy
Cream
Robotnik
Rouge
Omega
Chaotix (why Mighty disappeared might be nice)
...

Decent Backstory
Shadow (the only good thing about his game was the story)



For that matter, most of the characters have no actual personality apart from commonly seen archetypes and comical disorders (see: Babylon Rogues). Only Sonic ever shows a remotely cool personality, and that's not very often. Amy is starting to be considerably less annoying, but that's only because she is channeling that into Cream, so it balances out.



If SEGA actually put effort into the use of the characters they're running around making like crazy, perhaps things would turn out better. But of course, there will always be an enormous audience that absolutely abhors whatever they do...

Mighty isn't really part of the Chaotix. He's a "traveller" apparently, but winded up in the events of Knuckles Chaotix as he was passing by. It's like how Knuckles isn't part of the Chaotix either, and how Mighty's in SegaSonic Arcade. The comics stick him in the Chaotix and do a damn good job, but Sega themselves have never done so and couldn't do a good job if they tried.

Personally I reckon they should give the Mighty character to whatever's become of STI, and the designers/programmers there can make a game using the Sonic 2 engine or something that completely ignores the hedgehog. It's the best possible thing that can happen now, but it's unlikely to happen.

Talk about bad backstories? Remember that Tails was 12, I think, in Sonic Adventure 2, but somehow ended up 8 in Sonic Heroes?

But, anyhoo, SonicTeam needs to create characters with depth, and not random anthromopoids.

Why is it half the time you complain about having too much plot, but when characters lack it outside game specific things(I'M SILVER I GOTA SAVE THE FUTUR), you complain too? You never complain about the paradoxes that M&L Partners in Time created this much.

Actually, PIT explained paradoxes, not created them. For example, it explained the Mario Kart and Sports games where Baby Mario and Mario existed at the same time.

sonic's characters are so cookie-cutter and lifeless it's sad, you can use the same mold they use for castlevania game subtitles and it still works
