I don't think MFGG understands, as a whole, that sprites are created on a grid with limitations in size and color. If a piece presented in a competition does not apply with this then it is not a sprite that is usable in a game.

I don't understand what you mean. Are you saying that competitions should have limitations?

No. Sprites do.

I always said that if it can physically fit within a console's resoultion it should be allowed (although obviously the eariler ones since HD stuff is huge). i.e. if the sprite is less than say 320x240 or something.

No. Sprites do.

But any kind of PA is created on a grid with colours and size limitations, does that mean they're all usable?

Unless I misread or being a complete idiot. :3

I think we should take this into mind for the rules on PA. Sounds good. biggrin.gif

I was about to just add this to an edit of my post but you wouldn't have seen it anyway:

The problem with sprite competitions is that there are no limitations to the sprites supported or presented. Are these sprites 8x8? 16x16? 32x32? 16 bit color limit? 32? Or are they just sprites that can be used in a program such as Game Maker?

I think you're all spoiled by Game Maker which does not have these 16x16 or 32x32 limitations at all; Just graphics that move or animate with the ability to mix 16 bit with 32 bit. This makes sprite competitions hilariously flawed because nobody puts this into account.

Real sprites have to be able to be used in a game without being a waste of extra memory. You can't just slap them on anything.

But using those limitations would take out a lot of the fun of spriting. :<

Yeah, I find it a lot of fun to smash glass and flip tables but I'm still not allowed to do that.

My point is, limitations would defeat this entire "Sprite vs. 'pixel art'" argument.

Way to be all outrageous!

EDIT: What if the maker of a comp could decide on the limitations?

Or just require people to animate their work. At least 5 different frames for an entry should be required. And the animation should be an attack/ movement, not just standing...

edit: I realize we've been over this but if you can't animate then just try, try again. Not everyone can sprite either.

Animation or frames doesn't make what you believe to be a valid sprite an actually valid sprite.

If you are really good at spriting but can't make animations well, then the animation idea would kill your chances, despite being an awesome spriter.

It's kind of impossible to animate PA.

At least PA that has a background or that isn't a full body image.

Xgoff's idea might work, because sprite competitions often get lots of entries (both Pixel Art and Sprite Sheets).

Didn't someone said along time ago that sprite competitions were made so MFGG could have more sprites? pixelart are not sprites...
Tho, I do admit most of them look awesome...
Another little thing I'm gonna throw here and sorry if it bothers someone but I had to:
It's unfair...most people aren't pixelart experts or even novice on this pixelart thingy and we do what we are supposed to do...sprite stuff.
But people do pixelart and they win all the time because its obvious that pixelart will most of the time look and be much better than sprites.
So I find it unfair, and there should be two separate competitions, one for spriters and one for pixelart...right? o_0

It may be an arguable point whether someone who can't animate can be "really good" or "awesome" at spriting. If someone can sprite a character in one pose but can't sprite him in others, then it doesn't seem like his work would be very useful in games, and thus he might not be such a "great" spriter after all.

Is this a sprite?
Or pixel art?
And could it be hypothetically, able to be entered in a sprite competition?
I say yes, it is a sprite, but only has one pose, so does that make it not a sprite?
