Starring: Bruce Willis, Justin Long, Maggie Q, Timothy Olyphant, Kevin Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld)

Holy ****, was this a surprise. Ever since I heard that this was going to be the first PG-13 Die Hard, I lost quite a bit of hope for what looked like a great movie. I am a huge fan of the series and was disappointed that the swearing and violence would be made more kid-friendly (I think it's the most violent PG-13 I've seen lately though). However, other than what I'm going to list in the next paragraph, it was a fun and exciting action blast that went by far too fast.

Here are the negatives. This movie was Die Hard in name, character and catchphrase only. Other than a few gunfights, this movie felt nothing like a Die Hard movie and more like a generic action movie. The entire plot involving computers and hacking felt very different (although in its favor, the other movies in the series did use hacking as a subplot) and the entire situation being country-wide (taking place in the east coast mostly) was very untrue to the other films' stuck-in-one-place situations, even if the third movie did take place in New York City which isn't exactly a small location. Also, the lack of blood and swearing felt really bizarre in a Die Hard movie.

Other than what I've listed above, this movie was a loud, thrilling ride that was really fun and enjoyable to watch. The villain was naturally very evil and Bruce Willis impressed yet again as John McClane. Justin Long was a bit too much comic relief (and I'm still surprised he swore more than Mr. Yippie-Ki-Yay Mother****er himself) as was Kevin Smith (who was awesome anyway). Everyone else were just actors doing their job. The fight scenes were just plain in-your-face awesome and the final scenes in which Spoilers:
McClane shoots the main villain through a bullet hole in his own body
were awesome.

Overall, I recommend it for any action fan and just barely for fans of the series (only because of it not feeling like a Die Hard movie) and I give it an 8/10.

Brilliant review. I've actually had high hopes for this movie despite the few similarities I've noticed it shares with the original "Die Hard" movies.

I'll give this one a glace some day.

Live Free or Die Hard? Yes, I've heard it's a good movie. I'm not one for action movies, but I might watch it.

(Which I can do for free, because my dad's the manager of a movie theater, so NYEAH.)

I also will have a review, but it's a bit different since I'm coming from different circumstances. The full review will be up soon along with Fantastic Four 2.

I found out only a little bit before going that it was PG-13. This scared me, and for good reason. Die Hard is called Die Hard for a reason, not Die Soft. (Yeah I know that was cheesy) I was really surprised by this movie's story. I mean really, I would put this up there with comparisons to the first. But it was not Die Hard. While I liked the Agent Johnson nod to the first, there was basicly nothing that had to do with the first movies. There is basicly no blood. There is only one four letter word spoken, though several times, and it begins with an S. But most importantly, there was no Yippie--Ki-Yay Mother ****er. None. And don't give me any of that at the end bull****. That was censored out by gunfire and grunts. So no there wasn't one. Plus the extreme CGI in the end was totally fake as I feared.

So this was a great movie, but it was no Die Hard. I am very disappointed with this film and I will never forgive this studio for this choice.

3/5

Quick question: was it better than Die Hard 2, cause that one kind of sucked. Die Hard 3 was the best imho.

I heard it, just without the "-er," but yes it was definately muffled by gunfire to get the PG-13. And there was plenty of violence as well. In fact, I'd say this is one of the most violent PG-13 movies I've ever seen.

I'm not sure how someone could be a fanboy of a movie series, but if that's the case then I guess it's so. I am a huge fan of the series and I was very disappointed. I wrote how I felt afterwards, get over it.

I also found out that it was the studio's choice, not the director, to make it PG-13. And it was shot as a R movie. So hopefully there will be an unrated DVD or R rated.

Then I'd be content.

I was satisfied with it. Obviously, and like I said, it didn't feel like a Die Hard movie, but I thought it was great otherwise. And if this is released unrated, it'll definately sit proudly next to the other movies (whihc I still own on videocassette).

Oh and I didn't like how they switched between takes. Actors do something and when it goes to a close up their hands were not where they were supposed to be. It's clearly visible Spoilers:
after they get out of the van after the gas plant blows up

Anyone else notice that?

I am a huge fan of this series. Die Hard is my favorite action film of all time. I have been looking forward to this movie for several years now and after two okay sequels I'm happy to say this is the best one yet.
I found out hours before going that this was PG-13, which scared me. All other titles in the series have been R and unfortunately, I was right to fear that. This movie is not Die Hard. There is hardly any blood. There is no swearing. There is no nudity. There is no Yippie-ki-yay Mother ****er. There has nothing to do with Die Hard other then the fact that it stars Willis.
Which is a real shame because this is such a great movie outside of this. The story is incredible and probably the most original of the year. There is no plot holes and the acting is fantastic in itself. The only other issue is the ending stunt, which was completely noticeable CGI. So good movie, but no Die Hard.
