Summary "Anyone can cook." This saying is what this movie basically revolves around. Ratatouille takes place in Paris, France. The movie starts with Remy (voiced by Patton Oswalt), a mouse who's a tad different from the rest of his clan. In the movie's beginning we learn that Remy has a special gift in which his senses are on a higher magnitude than the rest of his clan. He can smell food found by his family and immediately detect what it's made of. His father, the clan's leader, underestimates Remy's gift until he saves his father from food that was covered with rat poison simply by smelling it. Remy is then given the possition of "poison checker". Remy, going against his father's wishes to avoid human contact and sneaks into an old woman's kitchen. The clan, at the time, was living under a woman's house, located in a field far from society. Remy then discovers about cooking, by watching television programs starring Gusteau (voiced by Brad Garrett). Gusteau was a remarkable chef, who believed that a chef dares to try new things, even if it may not work. The chef died shortly after his five-star resturaunt lost a star once to the snobby critic, Ego (voiced by Peter O'Toole). Remy then experiments in the woman's kitchen while she's asleep using a cookbook written by Gusteau called "Anyone can cook!". Until one night when Remy prepares his first meal: a mushroom on a stick cooked by a bolt of lightning. He sneaks into the kitchen with his brother and wakes her up. She then goes crazy, and starts shooting at the mice with a shotgun. Several missed shots crumble her roof, and reveal his hidden clan members. In an attempt to escape, the clan runs to a river where they get aboard makeshift rafts, and swim to a sewage line. Remy strays from the group for just a second to snag the book he had been secretly reading. This results in him losing his family, and getting lost in the sewers. Eventually, Remy starts to halucinate and talk with Gusteau as a figment of his imagination. He tells Remy to look around above the sewers and see and try new things. As Remy's exploring Paris, he runs into Linguini (voiced by Lou Romano), who starts his new job at Gusteau's now 3-star resturaunt under new management as a garbage boy. Remy, eyeing the kitchen, spots Linguini messing around with a soup. He then rushes to fix the soup that was "ruined" by Linguini, only to get caught and almost thrown into a river. Linguini, facing several problems of his own, learns that the rat has actually prepared a meal that the customer loved. He then teams up with the rat, in a scheme to keep his new job, where Linguini acts as a puppet and Remy controls him by yanking on his hair, giving him arm impulses, allowing him to cook the meals Remy wants to prepare. Review Pixar barely ever lets me down when it comes to movies. In today's age of CG animated movies, one that stands out among the crowd is a rarity. Ratatouille is among those movies. This movie relies on original humor, as opposed to most recent comedies who rely on pop-culture referances. The characters were amazingly creative and had wonderfully colorful personalities. The music fit the situation perfectly, like when you see Remy running around the streets of Paris avoiding dangers in the nick of time, a common visual seen in most Pixar movies. The movie's story flowed very well, and I really got into it as it progressed along. It was simple to keep up with and almost every moment was memorable. From Remy and Linguini practicing their "puppet act", to the main antagonist constantly going mad at the fact that he believes Linguini is hiding a rat from him (which he is). Ratatouille is by far the best movie I've seen this summer. I recommend this movie without a second thought. 5 out of 5

Cool! I remember Pixar all the way back to A Bug's Life and Toy Story. I'll be seeing Ratatoulie in a heartbeat. Sounds like a great fun movie!

| QUOTE (O'Chunks @ Jun 30 2007, 01:30 PM) | There's a meaning behind "Anyone can cook". It means, don't immediately judge. If a rat is a master chef, you're not gonna take the time to see if he can cook. You're gonna chase him off.
(That's just the movie's example. A rat can't REALLY cook, but you get the idea. :P) |
Eh, I was thinking more of "if at first you don't succeed, try try again", because Remy's dad kept trying to keep Remy away from becoming a chef. But I guess there might be 2 lessons. Or maybe "don't take all the credit for yourself". Well for some reason I didn't get the Disney/Pixar feeling while watching it. :/ But at least the humor made up for it. Oh, and how 'bout a Lifted review? (lol...?) Lifted is a short film that was released with Ratatouille. It is about an alien-in-training who has to abduct a human for his final test. However what makes it humorous is there are THOUSANDS of switches, and he must press the right one to lift the human into the UFO to finish his exam. This Pixar short film made the audience laugh soo much and was a great start for the real film. But don't take my word for it. Go see Ratatouille! 5 stars dude. (O'Chunks, have you noticed the abducted human looks a bit like Linguini?)
