Maybe not the majority of people, but I think that quite a few do.

| QUOTE (O'Chunks @ Jun 30 2007, 01:58 PM) | No. No. A thousand times "No".
Mario, along with a bunch of nintendo titles, are here as a series of fun games EVERYONE can play. It's a breath of fresh air from all these GTA rip-offs and realistic shooters. When parents go out to buy their little 6-year-old son a video game, they turn towards a name they know they can trust. A name that hasn't let down families for 20 years: Super Mario. |
Thanks for saving me the time of making a similar reply, and stating it better than I could have.
| QUOTE (Ultramario) | Young people play violent games, because they think these games make them mature/cool.
Then they insult people, who play/like games targeted to everyone. |
This sounds very true to me, though fortunately I haven't really run into people like that in real life (the reason it sounds true to me is the sheer amount of people like that who have been described by Mario fans on the Internet).
| QUOTE (Chrismonster) | | I don't think that young people who play these games do it because they want to be cool, it's simply because that's how most games are today, bloody, brutal and violent (have nothing against games like these, really enjoyed Manhunt). |
I kind of don't think that "most" games are like that nowadays. There are tons of E-rated games at stores, and that includes retailers that are fine with carrying M-rated games. True, a lot of the E-rated games are crappy ones based on TV shows, but there are still loads of good ones as well (many of which I own), like Mario, Kirby, Sonic, etc.
I do think striving toward "coolness" plays a large part in getting younger kids to play those games, especially given the smart-alecky attitude many of them have toward players of more innocent games.
