- poor collision detectoin (dying from jumping on a goomba)
- use of default TGF platform movements (this is a no-no for platformers, though 8-directional I dont mind as much)
- Ceilings to close (when combined with tgf default this sucks a lot)
- Automatic full screen (I love fullscreen games and ones that change the resolution, as long as my icons don't move around, but for the love of god I like a warning or at least an option
- TELL ME WHAT THE CONTROLS ARE!! This isn't a problem in klik games, but games made in GM can have really random mappings and most the time theres no option to change them, and people forget to make a "controls" part on their title screen or w/e to tell me what to press! I've found myself trying to figure out how to jump on the first level and a goomba walks into me. This is stupid.

Mario running around talking and cursing like a twelve year old in perfect (or sometimes broken) engish.

I can never quite get used to that one.

QUOTE (hohoo @ Jul 10 2007, 11:14 AM)
Well, I really hate when people use the SMB 1-1 or 1-2 levels in their games. These levels have been played 4252562 or even more times.

Since I'm a big fan of seeing classic levels presented in new ways, I actually love it when people include SMB 1-1. In fact, that was one of the hidden levels I intended to include in Super Mario Epic 3 (as were the first levels of SME1 and 2).

One thing I don't like is when people try awkwardly to introduce original characters. Sometimes it isn't that bad, but most of the time it just comes off like really bad fanfiction.

There are so many things I agree with listed in this topic already....

I'll just repeat the ones I agree with in this list, as well as add any that have not been mentioned.
  • Level design that sucks dick. This includes levels that run on and on on pretty much flat ground, with enemies approaching one after another and with only a few blocks, if any (usually by themselves or in single rows).
  • Glitchiness, especially really obvious and annoying glitchiness (as with collision detection not working right for blocks/enemies) that isn't that hard to fix and that it's hard to believe people would actually submit a game before fixing.
  • Crappy settings for in-game views.
  • Automatic resolution changes that have the potential to mess things up even after the game is closed (they may all be able to do this, though it only happened to me once so far).
  • Having to install certain games, as they're harder to be able to play the first time and harder to delete. (In the case of some, like SMBTDX, I don't care, though, because that game rules.)
  • Engines that use TGF's crappy-ass default platform movement.
  • Games with pre-made engines that hardly are any different from the original open-sources.
  • Games with obvious lag. They can be a headache to play.
  • Sprites/other graphics that go horribly together.
  • Very overused music.
  • Games that are just too difficult (like the unofficial PMW2, for example).
  • Games that are too easy because of faults in the engine/design.
  • Not knowing what the controls are (because they're not listed) so that you have to guess.
  • Games that people add so-called "mature" content like swearing and blood to for the sole reason of making themselves look "cool", especially if the game's about Mario or someone similar.
  • Last but not least, engines that, while not exactly glitchy, have "inaccurate" physics (by Mario standards as well as by real standards). By this I don't mean intentionally simple engines like SLD's, that have no horizontal acceleration to begin with, but one example of what I mean is engines that have acceleration but have it implemented incorrectly so that it doesn't make physical sense.
I'm sure there are others, but that should be enough for this post.

As long as it doesn't end up making me feel like I'm looking at a abstract painting, it isn't really too big of a pet peeve of mine.

When people give Mario a dialogue box. Tell me, has he ever had more than one ever, besides Luigi's Mansion?
