In my opinion, SMB3 is really far from overrated. That game is as close to perfection as a video game can get, it seems to me. I can't understand what's not to like about it. It and SMW are my favorite Mario games.
And like others said, SSBM isn't even technically a Mario game.

It sounds like you're trying to turn cons into pros here.
How are karts that are all the same in looks except for color better than a selection of fascinating-looking, very Mario-themed karts that includes karts that look like the originals as well?
As for less characters, I can't understand at all how that's anything like a pro. :X
MK64 is still cool, though, of course.
EDIT: One of MK64's main cons, it seems to me, is the fact that its tracks tend to be very long and get sort of monotonous after a lap or two.

Actually I wasn't trying to make them cons, they just happen to be among the differences, though I see how it could've been misinterpretted.
Though there did seem like the loads of karts weren't needed, as it worked fine with just "Light, Middle, and Heavy" as opposed to each kart bearing unique stats.
And I just remembered I hated Item being a stat, as thanks to this if you wanted a good kart you'd have to settle for Green Shells when in 7th place. But anyway
Edit: Also I love long tracks. That may be another reason why I prefer it

Ah, I seem to have misread your post then. Though the "unnecessary" part still puzzles me a bit. The kart variations, while not necessary, did, in my opinion, put MKDS a step ahead of MK64 in that particular regard. I guess your post just sounded to me like you considered the lack of kart variations an aspect where MK64 was better, because of your use of the word "unnecessary". But yeah, I'm probably just nitpicking now, and this is all merely a matter of differing opinions.
