SMUQ : Super Mario and the Ultimate Quest
Version 0.33
Introduction

Mario and Luigi arrive at Peach's Castle as Peach was going to throw a party there.
Everything was ok, when Bowser came.
Once again? Yes, but now he wants to destroy Mario with the magic of his Magikoopas!
Peach was in fright (hoping not to be kidnapped) and the two brothers were about to stop Bowser.
He didn't want to be beaten then he ordered the magiks to attack immediately.
Their attack was succesful but the victim wasn't Mario... but Peach!
(Chill, because Peach isn't dead)
Peach was transformed in a puzzle! ( headslap.gif )
As usual, Bowser took every puzzle piece and scattered them all over.
Now it's up to Mario to rescue Peach again by getting the 9 Puzzle Pieces!!

GamePlay

As soon as you start the game you are in the Warp Zone. The first Warp Zone has 5 levels and Luigi's House.
You may save your game at his House, but I cannot guarantee they'll work on future versions. Also there's a mushroom box there so you can recover yourself.
The controls are the following (They're also showed if you press F1)

Left and Right arrows : Move
Up : Enter doors
Down : Duck, enter pipes
Space or Z: Jump
Ctrl or X: Shoot fireballs or hammers (when with the appropriated upgrade)
V : Show/hide the HUD
F2 : Restart the Room (if you're stuck or any glitch occur you may use this, you won't lose health or lives or anything)
F4 : Trigger Fullscreen

Known glitches:
-Slopes are buggy when going up
-Weird collisions between koopa shells and blocks
-Sometimes you may get stuck on the blocks after ducking. (mask change)

FAQ

Q: Will you finish this game?
A:I hope so. I'm making it in my free time.

Q: Why isn't this game like other Mario games?
A: Because it's health based and some Mario's physics doesn't apply here.

Q: Your game sucks.
A: This isn't even a question.

Q: Does this game have any cheats?
A: No. But you may find out interesting things if you're curious enough.

Q: No really, your game sucks.
A: Go play another game, if you'd please.

Q: I can't beat any boss! Will you help me?
A: Most bosses just need you to jump on them. It isn't really difficult. You may lose some lives on the first tries though.

Q: Can you send me the source code?
A: Nope, sorry.

Q: What program did you use?
A: Game Maker 5.3 since it supports unicode stuff with drawing functions (The game has 2 languages, english is default).

Q: Will you make your game easier? I can't beat even first stage.
A: The game is meant to be as hard as fun. You may think it's difficult at first, but if you REALLY wanna beat this game, you'll have to keep trying.

Q: Ok. I REALLY wanna beat the game, but you made a new version and my save is gone. I don't wan't to restart all over.
A: Try to get a screenshot of your previous game and PM me with it. ( I just need to know the score, lives, keys, powerup, puzzle pieces and health ) If everything goes right, I'll send you back a converted version of your save. I'll only do it if you prove me you did it all, in other words, if you send me the screenshot. Sorry.

Q: Why isn't the game smooth on some levels?
A: Probably because they have lots of stuff. This is most unlikely to happen, though, because it runs smooth enough on lots of PCs I've tested. Try to close some programs you have open.

Update History:

V01 - Game Released with full world 1
V011 - Bug fixes and misc features added such as fire flower.
V021 - World 2 released
V022 - View problem fixed, friction increased and misc bug fixes
V032 - Tileset and most of the sprites changed, BETA stages released, swimming engine added, additional controls, new item : hammer, new enemies, Title Screen redone and lots of new stuff.
V033 - Intro improvements, small warp zone changes and skidding added.

Lots of Credits to NO Body and Tonberry2k, for the the koopa kids sheet and the smw enemy sheet.
Also credit for Sparker the Pikachu, Boo Mansion and Sphax (TSR) for some intro sprites.
Other credits are in game.

Every suggestion or bug report is appreciated. Well... almost every.

Judging by the screens Mario is too small for the environment, but I haven't tried it yet.

The styles clash a lot, I'm afraid. M&L doesn't go too well with NSMB. Also, the relative sizes of the characters/objects/etc. are off.

I'll try out the demo anyway.

I say you change all of the sprites because they all clash horribly. Use Iggy from SPP or sumtin i dont know.

Pretty fun, but my only gripe is that Mario's movement is WAAAAY too slippery. Shouldn't he stop FASTER if you press the opposite direction of what he's moving in? Because by habit when I want to stop from falling off a ledge while going too fast to the right I'll press left, and then instead of stopping I'll just fall into a pit.

Also the sizes of the enemies relative to Mario...Are very small. Also the view doesn't follow Mario enough. Increase the hbor and vbor in the view options.

In this update you get:
-View fixed, now Mario moves at the center of the screen
-Friction raised, it isn't that slippery now.
-Several minor bug fixes

Does anyone know of a good sprite set that would fit in here and have all the poses I need?

Wow are you ever doing it wrong.

When resizing things in Game Maer, either use the "Best" option or the "Worst" option. Worst makes it looks pixeated which is sometimes the desired effect, and best makes it blurred up to make it look better.

When resizing in Paint, Never EVER do it manually. EVER. Highlight what you want bigger/smaller, right click it, and select "stretch/scew". Enter the same alue into the top two boxes. 50% for smaller, 200% for bigger.

Also none of those are the same size. Try again.

Both "Poor" and "Excellent" in Game Maker look bad.
Although the Paint one worked. laugh3.gif
I think you deserve a place in the credits even if its a so simple thing.
I'll be busy for a while now, resizing what needs to be resized.

Either way if you're going to stick with the NSMB style and if you change Mario to NSMB Mario, then maybe you could resize all the enemies the same way you did the Monty Mole in Paint.net, since it seems to fit in a little bit.

Unfortunately NSMB mario doesn't have every pose I need..
I'm tryin to find another one to replace the M&L one.
In fact I've found some, but almost none would fit in there.
