I just read about this and, if you guys don't mind, I'm going to share a semi-related story.
First of all, most carnival rides scare me. Ferris wheels are fine, since normally they're not too far off of the ground (not 65 feet or whatever the 5 people in the story died from). So I go with this huge group of friends and we head to the ferris wheel as the last thing we do. About 15 or so feet up, I'm in a car with 2 other friends. One of them reaches to the side and brings his hand back... with a rather large piece of metal.
"Where'd you get that from?" "It was from the side of the car, it was falling off."
At this point, my other friend and I are freaking out. Once we reach the top, the ride stops and, there being some kind of back-and-forth movement mechanism, the ride starts wobbling. To make things better, the ride is temporarily stuck. I'm only about 40 feet up though, but I'm thinking about where I'd try to land in case it fell. Luckily, it started back up again, although it was very sudden so it scared the **** out of us. On the ground, I took out my phone, called my parents and left.

I once went on a ferris wheel (only once, mind you). It was freaky and disturbing to sit in a rocking chair suspended 50 feet in the air without seat belts or whatever. Once you're on, it's too late. Can't do anything if it falls or something. So I'm haven't ridden since and I don't plan too.
