I see no problem with pointing out specific fangames that have problems. It gives more concrete examples, and talking negatively about a game is not the same as talking about the person who made it.

QUOTE (hazmeister @ Aug 23 2007, 05:50 AM)
PEOPLE. Midi volume can be set in the windows control panel, althought its sometimes hidden. Check the properties, and reduce volume on either MIDI or SW SYNTH.

The thing is, that's not how it's supposed to be. Sound is just as important to equalize. You'd be pretty much pissed off if you had a really great PC game that was incredible, but you had to constantly change your volume because there were parts that were soft, and ones that were loud. Kind of like a movie, I hate it when there's parts of loud action, and then suddenly a quiet moment and you can't hear a blessed word anyone's saying.

That's why some YouTube Poop videos are annoying, because you have relatively normal volume, and then the creator decides to increase the volume heavily for some unknown reason, you suddenly have to turn down your speaker quickly, only to have to turn it back up once that stupid clip is done.

Unfortunatley, the setup on every machine is different. 100 in my opinion is a fine level for volume. But perhaps that's because we didn't have headphines when I started music GCSE composiion all those years ago. But if MIDI files are often too loud, MFGG is probably the only thing which will still use MIDI on your computer. I tend to set MIDI volume to roughly 40%.

I agree because we can learn from games that have mistakes and what we could do to make them better.

BTW, one thing I don't like in a game is you have to jump or do any other actions by pressing the shift key b/c of the stickykey notice which could interrupt your game. I prefer ctrl or the space bar.

Which may as well be done anyway, because StickyKeys is a practically useless feature in most scenarios.

The first sin is making a topic in MFGG, and not having any proof to back it up. This also includes, but is not limited to, posting a topic asking people to make the game for you, starting MMORPGs (Especially 3D ones), and posting ideas.

But these are obvious.

Many of the others have been mentioned--window errors, idiotically designed levels, bad choices of music and sound, using voice acting created by the fangame maker OR using existing clips...anyhtign with Sonic in it...nude anything...swearing..bad spelling...blood in a Mario game--the list goes on.

But my biggest pet peeve, the number one most AWFUL thing for any game creator to do...
...is retcon CANONICAL bits of a story with a fangame.

The worst thing ANY fan game designer can do is change the resolution of the screen,
and use up or shift for platform jumping.

The resolution annoys us because it messes up some of our computers (Such as,
smaller windows, color changes, blue screen of death, ect.) And seriously, why would
you want to do it? I mean, 320X240 actually looks good in some games, but all the
others look horrible.

Using up for a platform game is a VERY VERY VERY bad desision, the main reason is
because some keyboards direction keys don't work when you are pressing up; that
was the only problem I could find with Toodle's Team's Bowser World games.

Using shift is generally OK, it doesn't really annoy me, and most fangames are OK with
it (Yoshiland, ect.) but what gets on my nerves is the n00bs who have no idea you can
turn stickykeys off!

Those are my most hated Game design sins.

Edit:

I don't know if this was mentioned before, but when you ump on two enemies and you die. It happens in almost every game and is really annoying.

I'm-a sticky this topic, because it's another really important aspect of fangame development besides engine use.

This is an excellent topic!

One of the main things I'm trying to ensure works 100% is jumping. At the moment for the game I'm working on there's no variable jumping, mainly because it's not something that has been brought to my attention until now.

Has anyone had any problems with the lighting effects used in a fan-game? The game I'm making relies heavily on this so I'd like to get some responses about it so I can troubleshoot.

I, for one, hate ESPECIALLY crappy grammar. I don't say that I can be the best writer in the world, but I hate the "Oh, hep mei, Marioo!" sentences.

I suggest going to the Help Forum for this, good sir/madam.

As for another thing, I hate in GM games where you hit the very corner of a block/solid and you either:

Get stuck indefinitely or...

Disappear and later fall down from heaven.
