...No, it doesn't. It makes the game a lot less Mario-ish, and how could that make the game better? The map screen may look very SMB3-like and classic, but the music makes the experience seem almost not like SMB3 at all, and halfway not like Mario.
Yeah, non-Mario music can be a good thing in fangames, but the claim that non-Mario music makes them better than Mario music does is, well, absurd - especially if the music in question comes from a game as radically different from Mario as Sonic 360 is.

I can't imagine how you think the music fits at all. No offense meant, but Waligie's music hardly fit the game worse than this game's music fits it. How does exciting, fast-paced rock music fit a SMB3-style map screen? :S
At least the "same little songs" would be Mario-ish.
But meh, I'll drop the music argument. It's probably pointless anyway.
As for the graphics, I honestly don't see why some people are complaining so much about them. They don't bug me. It would be nice if Hello used different graphics for different games, but using the same ones isn't that big of a deal, especially when he uses varying tilesets. As I'm sure you guys can see, in this game he used different recolors of Black Squirrel's tileset, which is a good thing, and which gave the game some interesting graphical variety.
And yeah, M&L:SS graphics aren't the best for platformer games; keeping the SMB3 ones would probably be preferable. Though to be honest, I'm personally not a big fan of M&L graphics in general.

It's most definitely not pointless. Music is the integral part of what helps emit what emotions you want from the game and get a general feeling atmosphere. If a certain music doesn't seem to fit the game, then it's most likely the case that it doesn't.
I'd like to say that the music, as much as you tried getting the hard-core, fast-pased feel across with it, Hello... it doesn't quite work with this game. It feels like random music tracks that were added in, when music should feel like it was specifically meant to be the game, almost as if the music was created only for that game. You could have used some Mario remixes, instead, or original music that fit the style of the current action of the screen.
Trust me, this is talking from several years of experience in music.
