My subscriptions on Norton Antivirus and Webroot Spy Sweeper are running low, so instead of paying another $50 each for another year, I'm looking for a free program for either spyware or virus protection (or preferably both). Anyone know of any good, free ones?

I've heard AVG was pretty good, can anyone clarify?

Wow, how the hell did I miss that?

Well, lock it up I suppose.

Edit: I know it's gonna be locked regardless, but in all fairness it wasn't a sticky on the Help board but rather in the Vault so don't be hatin'.

Before the topic gets locked, I'll back up your clarification and insist that AVG is damn fine. Doesn't take up a crapload of resources like Norton's, and I haven't had a problem since I got it.

Basically on you're machine you'll want.

AVG - Ad-Aware - Spy Bot Search and Destroy - Hijack this

However be careful with Hijack this, mainly because it can pick up some system registry or something.

Ask someone to analyze you're log.

I find adaware less useful than spybot. You'll also want a firewall. Comodo is awesome and free, but not Vista compatible yet. If you have SP2, the built in firewall should be fine

hate to bump this, but Adaware and Spybot search and destroy are great. It's better not to have only one ant-spyware thing on you're machine.
