| QUOTE (GeneralGuy @ Sep 20 2007, 08:15 PM) | I'm sorry, but I think you should accept this. Like I mentioned earlier, there is absolutely no reason to decline these, as far as the quality is concerned.
Simply because it's a model, you decide to decline it? And yes, I think it is meant for a 2D fangame. These model textures are setup in a 2D perspective, which is very convienent for a game designer intending to create a 2D SSB game.
There are already numerous rips on the main site anyway, so why not accept this?
Not to mention that Retriever II's paper mario rips are textures in a 2D perspective. |
Exactly, people! The NSMB sprites are in a similar way: While they are 3D, technically, they are setup in a 2D perspective, so they work. (In fact, I went and swapped some sprites from one of my game projects with these, and they work ok. I did have to resize a couple.)

I can't tell at a glance if the images on the sheet are scaled differently or not. But if they're the same size, and if the animations are indeed of sufficient quality and quantity, I'd have to say that if it were up to me, I'd probably accept them.
The reason for this is that it seems rather immaterial what sort of game the images came from originally, and what form they were originally in - even though it was originally a 3D game with models, it seems to me that sprites (i.e., 2D images usable in game-making programs that use sprites) should surely be able to be made from images of 3D models provided that (1) the images are captured well, and (2) they are useful for a fangame.
Regardless of the fact that in SSB there's a zooming camera, sprites similar to these could easily be used in a side-scrolling Mario fangame that requires no zooming. Metal Mario is, after all, usable in games other than SSB.
Also, perhaps I should point out that I've seen submissions on the main site before that are 2D sprites made from 3D model images. Easy examples would be NSMB Mario/Luigi sprite sheets. Also I recall there being a lib (by Thunder Dragon?) that had SM64 sprites made with SM64's models in it.
Just my two cents. Please understand that I'm not trying to unduly influence Phage or push him in any way; the decision fully belongs to him and the other staff.
