the thing is, how many spin-off games do these series have?

What kind of point is this supposed to make?

Did Bowser like take over the Wimbeldon dome or something in a Mario Tennis game? Or I am I not missing anything?

I dig the comical version of him. I mean just look at Bowser. Can you take that seriously to begin with? He's a big turtle dragon with bright red anime hair* and a dog snout. I think it would be kinda dumb if they took him too seriously.

no, he became like this because of the spin-offs. RPGs focus on story, in the story are characters, and each character needs a personality. It was then used again in other RPGs and other spin-offs. Not many platform games can focus in like that.

In Metroid, Samus has an array of foes, but the constant in the series is the Space Pirates. Since their appearance in Super Metroid, they've appeared in every Metroid game since, as some of the tougher foes to beat. In the Prime series, they're one of the main threats as well, with the Phazon mutation research.

Bowser is a constant major character in every Mario game, though, so you can compare Bowser with the Space Pirates or perhaps even with Ridley (created by the Space Pirates). There are even cases when Samus and the Space Pirates are, relatively, on the same side when faced with a major opposing force or villain despite the fact that the Space Pirates will set their sights on you once the major problem is dealt with.

Not to mention, the Space Pirates are hilariously incompetent in a lot of cases, according to Prime (and, arguably, Zero Mission, like when the Space Pirates try to latch onto your ship when blasting out of the Pirate facility)

I really do not get the point of this topic.

To me Bowser was always a goofy goon of a villain. D:

QUOTE (Joey @ Sep 13 2007, 07:39 PM)
I never thought of Koopa/Bowser as a competent villain, ever. In SMB he guarded a bridge in his own castle over a lake of lava with an axe at his end of the bridge; that's not very smart. In SMB3 he replaced his bridges with breakable bricks and tried stomping Mario; that wasn't very smart either. In SMW he was scary looking but still very goofy, especially after you hit him. He couldn't even keep the Princess inside the clown car.

In Mario 64 it was clear from his dialogue that he was pretty goofy and not too smart. Hell, he put bombs around his own reigning platform.

In short, I like Bowser the best when he still knows his place as the villain and Mario's enemy, but is still an idiot. Paper Mario 2 had the best personification of the Bowser character, in my opinion.

Also what was with the axe just sitting there to cut the bridge on smb. Why didn't he cut it himself instead of letting mario past him?

I like the comical Boweser. He can still be a great villain and stupid at the same time. It makes him more likeable.

Maybe even loveable.

I agree, entirely.

I like Bowser being the main villain, but I like his idiocy as well. It keeps him from being just another badguy. Leave the serious evilness to others.

I think baby bowser used the clown car in M&L2 also. And it rocks cuz SMW's boss fight was awesome 8(

Yea I like goofy Bowser, and I think he never came off that way originally because Nintendo focused on making a RADICAL game instead of 'deep story'!! So nowandays he seems buffoonish! (that's a real word?)

What I don't like is when he's completely neglected or has some easy boss battle. Both Paper Mario games portrayed Bowser really well, and I can't wait to see everything he does in Galaxy.

I liked the old Bowser, but now that I think of it, Bowser has always been a comic relief. The only game he has not been one was in SM64 where he really was kinda evil.
Just think: in SMB you remove the bridge that holds him and he's walking in mid-air, like in a cartoon.
in SMB3 Bowser stomps himself into death
in SMW.. well that was KINDA evil and serious.
in SMW2, he was the Jr version which we have no problem with, right?
only in SM64, Bowser seemed to have an evil plan and also felt really evil, also he was talking in an evil way and all that stuff.
And in SMS, you defeat Bowser sitting in a bathtub..
And after that, they just increased his comic-relief personality.

However, I'm happy how Luigi seems to turn back to his old self in SPM in the beginning where he doesn't hesitate to attack Bowser and Bleck in the beginning sequence... (Got the game yesterday, so dunno how he'll act later on)

The mario has a deep and compelling storyline where bowser should play a large part as the evil mastermind, dumbing down the series like this instead of making them more serious is rather odd by nintendo. As a series progresses, it should mature, not only gameplaywise, but storywise too.

Look at sonic for example. The story has gotten better with each installment of the 3d series, unfortunately, the gameplay isn't even close to the story.

I hope nintendo wises up and makes a more mature and sophisticated mario for us all.

Bowser is better as a comic relief, methinks, because he just doesn't work as a villain anymore. I don't think that even half of the Mario fans want to see the original-styled Bowser, like this:
Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario defeats Bowser, Peach is rescued, Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario defeats Bowser, Peach is rescued, Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario defeats Bowser, Peach is rescued, Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario defeats Bowser, Peach is rescued, Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario defeats Bowser, Peach is rescued... You get my point, don't you? All I'm saying is, that the Mario series truly needs some comical relief apart from some other funny sidekicks and such. Don't always complain about how Bowser is stupid, how Peach is a... you know, how Luigi doesn't get his own game (except Luigi's Mansion and kind of, MIM) and such. I don't think Nintendo will change Bowser much, so let it be like it. But, I kind of see your point, and... Maybe I'll stop my ramblings for now... ohmy.gif

People are complaining that Bowser's a giant goofball, but if he can effing headbutt you into next Tuesday, I'd rather watch my mouth than to suffer that kind of ass-kicking.

He's a meathead. Sure, he's got some degree of intelligence (he has to, he's a king), but for him to be as bumbling as he is makes him likeable as a major villain compared to those that the game makes you absolutely loathe by the time you get to his lair, i.e. Yggdrasill, Ganondorf, etc.
