Jason Orme - Today Is Tomorrow's Yesterday

CLICK HERE TO VIEW / LISTEN

Well, i've had my Yamaha keyboard for around 6 months now, I plug it into my computer via the midi input/outputs, I can sit there for hours but yet I never seem to ever finish anything (story of my life).

Well, a few nights ago I finally sat down and got somthing done.

The main reason I needed somthing done was so I could work out how to save it, compress it and possibly render it.

So I churned out this track which i've titled "Today Is Tomorrow's Yesterday".

Its not anything brilliant, its very poorly made and very lazy, many skips and lazy bridges and song structure. Not too mention out of key. The compression and recording quality is poor, somthing I need to fiddle about with abit more.

But all of this was composed by myself, a complete amatuer, sitting and playing these notes, keys and drums. Imagine the possibilitys with alittle more effort, time and if the quality was better.

The track itself has been recorded directly from the keyboard rather than it being a midi output.

As for the video, ignore it, just somthing I whipped up as its easier to share things via youtube. (gotta love the dancing spider-man though).

Probably going to compose my own game music from now on (always done it in basic midi before).

I didn't like the hihat thing you got there.

Well idk, it wasn't like omfgwow awesome, but as you said, it wasn't really super-duper amounts of effort.

I'd like to hear a song with more effort put in it, ok? This one needs bit of work, but could turn out good.

This could definitely improve with a little more effort put into it, I agree. You've got something good going on here, indeed!

You recorded the keyboard's voices? You're connecting it into the CPU via MIDI-Output method, I don't know why you wouldn't just use a program that has it's own samples or VST instruments and can use a MIDI keyboard as a controller for those samples/VSTi's. I'm sure that would make it much better.

I connect it via the midi input/output, I then record my track via Sonar by Cakewalk, which is where I do all the editing etc. (the output is set to my keyboard so its doesn't sound like midi).

If I was to save it, it would only save as a midi (due to it only have midi data, and thus when played on a computer would sound as a midi does).

What I do instead after i've created the track, connect a cable from the phones socet on the keyboard and connect to my computers input, open up another program (audacity) and click record, then go back to Sonar and press play (having set the output to my keyboard so its not midi).

I've tried samples etc in the past when rendering midis, I just don't like them.

Ah.

So then it's just a simple fact that you don't have a program capable of applying either VSTi's or Soundfonts to the MIDI input.

Yeah, samples can be good if you'll only be using it's default sound, but when they need to be stretched to reach different notes, it does sound terrible. Soundfonts are great, as they're like samples, but they have a good way of stretching the sample so it doesn't sound cruddy.

Yeah thats the problem, all the samples are not set to the notes, they are just one god awful sound (usually sound very si-fi / trace).

Any program that you could recommend that would have these samples?

Not any that are free.

If you're willing to pay, I can list off a good amount of programs that are VST hosts, and one in particular that uses Soundfonts.

I'm not sure what do you mean, but...

...there are two really good programs: FL Studio and MadTracker.

Tried FruityLoops, worked with it for years, really don't like it, and again the samples sound terrible.

FL Studio is what I use. In combination with other programs, I mainly use it for my drum tracks and some automatic VSTi hosting for things like synths or for instruments I'd rather have automatically play than use my MIDI keyboard and play myself.

Here's a list of programs you need to pay for that I use:

FL Studio
Cubase
Tracktion 2
Modplug Tracker
Adobe Audition (formerly known as CoolEdit, I have the CoolEdit version)
Ableton Live (I use this for improvisational music for ideas, and for live DJ performances)
And a crapload of VSTi's that I can't list off without taking up the maximum amount of characters in a post.

Thanks for the links, some i've tried in the past.

Knowing me though, I like to keep things basic, if I can stick to just playing via the keyboard itself then all the better, rather than using the aid of multiple programs and wading through lists of samples which all sound horrible, let alone the same.

Think i'm gonna give Adobe Audition a try, Fruity Loops just doesn't cut it with me (apart from drum tracks).

Well, then I say good luck to you, and respect you for your option.

it could be easier if you just hired a band but it's not like that's available anyways

A band would be the easiest option in every case, but thats not why I make music.

I play the keyboard/piano as its relaxing, a hobby and satisfying.
My aim isn't to make money or anything, just to simply create tracks that I and others can enjoy.
