Are recolor character refs really that bad?

Just like mine's? What's your opinion?

Because i have one or two ideas in case i wanna swich my ref.

We just view them as bad due to the fact that they usually mean the creator is either too lazy or not being creative enough, which is frowned upon here.

Especially with Mario and Sonic. The Sonic fanbase is the worst fanbase on the net because of all the recolours, and a Mario recolour is just silly. Who wants to be a mustached middle-aged plumber?

In my case, i think i'm not creative enough, because one of them isn't really "me" (Drezus), and the other seems to suck, but i'll post images later to people decide if i really want to change refs.

-Recolors and direct copies
These people appear on boards under the persona of someone else. For example: I’ve seen so many Sonic recolors, Sonic makeovers, sonic edits, direct sonics, sonic himself, tails, tails clones, knuckles clones and recolors that I don’t like Sonic as a franchise anymore. It’s all thanks to the fanbase (more like a cult).

Recolors are really just the original with new colors. People take photoshop and edit the hue of a picture and then have the nerve to call it ‘original’ or ‘art’. No no no no no, that’s so wrong. It makes you look LAZY. Yes, LAZY. Too lazy to come up with something interesting yourselves, to lazy to create a backstory worth telling, to lazy to think up a name worth mentioning (no more ‘super’, ‘chaos’ or otherwise). Recolors are a waste of time and space.

Direct clones are even worse, dammit. You’re too lazy to even RECOLOR IT, eh? Pshhh, you’re even worse than the recolors, who actually take a few minutes to try something. You need to stop being alive and taking up space where others might do better.

This is the character i said it wasn't "me" (Drezus). It's name's Mark, and i was/am doing a story with him, just like Miyamoto used to think on Zelda when he was younger, so i can do something if i decide to make Game Design.



This is a drawing i did now in MSPaint, i'll scan some drawings later when i find my scanner. i just posted this here to people see how the current Luigi recolor was hugely based on this character. He has a very complex story already, so i would be kinda ruining him if i started naming him Drezus, but that doesn't matter, as long as people prefer him over *AY LUIGISS.



Oh, here's another pic i could find in my PC that i did some time ago. It's from a Do-your-own-face-for-RPGMaker-thingy. I posted it here so people wouldn't start saying i created that character today.
Oh, there's also May and Stalks.(i said the story was complex)

why does everyone needs some kind of persona on an internet message board anyway?

Unless you create characters constantly for other purposes (like art projects or comics or animations), there's no reason for it.

which is one of the reasons why i stopped doing the whole persona thing a couple years back :V

Also, an already existing character can't be YOUR "ref character." That's stealing.

I just did it when I first joined because it seemed like everyone else was doing it, taking some video game character and making it slightly different. I still have a special place in my heart for my old shyguy recolor, he was the best <3

Because I need some catchy mascot for my music in the marketing business.

Well, if you create a character that isn't just a recolor of an already existing character then it is your character.

I've had my Sonic edit for a long time.

Why change it now?
