Are recolor character refs really that bad?

Many old members have given up their edits/recolors and moved on to more original ones. But it's the recolors/edits that will always be dear to me!
Kinda nostalgic.

I make up characters for my comic and my drawing. :3



The only characters I don't particularly like are ones that look like the main characters, i.e. Sometimes, though, recolors can come out very nice.

Only if there just a pallet swap.

...And that is EXACTLY what a recolor is.

Anyway, I'm an edit, at least. And I have a human ref floating around somewhere. I think recolors are bad, that's just editing colors. However, edits are fine because you can put some work into them.

As long as they're not Sonic.

I am not trying to be mean but we could use you as an example.

My reference is just a recolor, and I've had him for more than a year.

I'm not a huge mega ultra fan of recolors myself... even though that's what my original character was. I can stand them and stuff, but there's too many.

ESPECIALLY the Sonic fanbase. I really hate saying this part, because my partners in crime Drive and Roxy are Sonic character recolors/edits as well, and I'm bashing them where they probably don't go; I don't like that. But I must say; I HATE SONIC RECOLORS.

There's too many. Why? Sonic's too damn popular. Why? He's portrayed as "cool" and funny. Especially Shadow, people just like him because he looks cool. Then they always portray him as the cool, social character, not the mysterious, badass character he should be. That or they make him bloodthirsty, which leads to half of the comic being that annoying default shade of red. AUGH.

I like Sonic games, but I'm not going so far as to base my religion off of him.

I consider forum characters quite unnecessary, to be honest. I've never had one myself, and if I ever had a reason of some sort to get one, it would just be a cartoonified version of myself.

Know why I still have a Yoshi edit? Because I can't draw. I've got at LEAST five original characters that I could assign as a persona right this instant, except I can't put them into any sort of visible form and have them look good... hell, have them look recognizable. And, somehow, that's a crime? I'm offended.

And YES, I partake in RPs on a semi-regular basis, so I have an excuse to be making these characters.

If you're going to make a character, you've got to make it ORIGINAL.

Whatever floats your boat, It's your charactor make it whatever you like.

Your's is not really even a recolor... it's the same exact thing as a Breloom.

Yes but I should note, it was never even intended to be a character, it just happened.

YAY I'LL RECOLOR SOME CHARACTER THAT EXISTS ALREADY AND IT'LL BE GREAT, AWESOME AND ORIGINAL.

I hate that why can't you just make your own character instead of a palette swap and an accessory or two. It shows no originality and just shows how much of a lazy guy the person is.

Oh and it is making one, an UNORIGINAL one.

I'm gonna get a blue Pikachu, with a LoZ sword, a Mario hat, and some really cool Sonic speed shoes.
