I agree with what you say, just because it's NES/Atari doesn't mean it has to be flat, look at the SMB1 part!
As for the Megaman tiles, I did both of 'em. I thought that the waterfall, 2 platforms, white pipes (or whatever the heck that is) and the red falling platform was enough to keep it unrepetive, but maybe one of them robofrogs would look nice on the top platform. I'll see what I can do.
