How do you make Mario ground pound (SM64 and NSMB) in GM7?

Here we go.

Okay, so first, you want to check if Mario's in the air. If not, don't have him do anything, because you don't ground pound in the air.

If he's in the air, set a ground pound variable (let's just call it pound) to 1. Then set the vertical speed to a high value, say, ten.

Finally, have the sprite set to his ground pound sprite. And lastly, have any objects below him that are supposed to be destroyed get destroyed. This is a simple collisions check in the Mario object, just check if "pound" is equal to 1, then if he's above the object (y is less than other), and finally destroy it if true.

And when he collides with the ground, set "pound" to zero and have him stand up.

It helps if the origin for all the sprites are at the bottom, so you don't get stuck in the ground.
