Cause I mean, its not them that made the sprites, its some guy in the company who made the game that made them. Then some guy rips the sprites and asks for credit like they made them, but doesn't give credit to the company! Its sprite theft! Its just wrong! OK fine, I would give credit to them for ripping them, but only if they said it like "Give credit to me for ripping them, but most importantly, give credit to (company name)!"

Asking for credit on sprites you did not originally make is theft. As a result, I think you should just ignore the credit tag. They're not going to do anything about it anyway.

However, there are exceptions. Huge rips, such as the Paper Mario textures, should require credit.

You credit them because they busted their ass to rip a bunch of sprites,
If I'm gonna waste my ****in' evening for you getting graphics from a game, You damn well better slap on somewhere at least once "Mecha ripped these for me, I'd have nothing without him"

Jeez it's called gratitude.

Yeah, come to think of it, people ought to put things on their rip sheets that make it clear that Nintendo should be credited for making the sprites, and preferably put such a notice before the "give credit to me for ripping" part.

It's usually obvious who made the sprites, well at least what company, if you were searching for those sprites specifically.
Crediting the guy who ripped 'em is just manners, like "Oh hey this isn't my shirt, that justin kid lent it to me. BUT IT WAS MADE IN KANSAS HILLS OHIO @ PO BOX 432-95790"

If noone gave credit for sprite rips there would be less of a reason to spend time on ripping them

I don't get why people don't like giving credit in games. The credit screen is one of the best screens in a fangame, because you can have pointless fun with it, and it also shows that how much was done on your fangame with the more credits you have on it.

I and many rippers don't require any kind of recognition for the sheets we produce.

However.

It's a courtesy to give credit to someone for doing work that you would otherwise have had to do yourself. But they should only be credited as such. They did not create the sprites - don't pretend that they did. Just a section to name the various rippers who contributed to your project would be sufficient - to list each object individually would be excessive.

The only time I've ever given credit is when I used RII's and Lightning's rips of the characters and textures from TYD (respectively) in my comic because they're so awesome. For everything else, I just rip/make it myself.

I feel that the only times you should be obligated to give is credit is A) when it was really difficult to rip and required heavy editing, or B) you want to be a nice person. I've never made a fangame, so I've never had to make anything remotely similar to a credits reel.

Nobody has to give credit for someone who ripped, for example, all of the Koopa Kids from Super Mario Bros. 3. Not saying it wouldn't be polite to mention them, though.

Exactly. Credit is not necessary but a thanks is always nice.

Anyone remembered the days where people were so cool that you didn't HAVE to do that to get credit?

And nobody stole sprites?

Credit should only be asked if ripping this sheet was time consuming and difficult. Even if we didn't make the sprites, we took time out of our lives to allow you to use them.
I, however, very rarely ask for credit.

Eh.

The only difference between that and actually asking for credit is that one sounds nicer than the other, imo.

Well that's the thing, I'm not asking for it.
I'm saying it's optional, and it's up their goodwill and choice to do it or not.

"between that and asking for it"

You want their credit. The difference is how much authority you assume (don't get me wrong, it's better not to assume authority for ripping sprites)
