Sorry for another sticky, but you're going to have to deal with it for a little while. I guess I just can't STAND not being up here where all the attention is, huh?

It's not in the rules, but removing advertisements is an action enforced by several past mods and admins. It is even something recognized by members and you guys often report these things.

I would like to reinforce this for my own purposes since it's not in the rules: I will not be allowing advertisements in the GC. Shameless plugs for websites or products will be removed unless it actually serves a purpose I.E. it isn't a blatant advertisement just to get some hits. If you've made art or music then you know that goes in the art forum, and a link in your signature will get your hits just fine. We don't need to baby you all through that anymore, unless you're a brand new member. Failure to comply with what's said here will result in a ban of appropriate length.

Thank you.

Yeah. In the PPP it doesn't matter as much, but promoting something of yours in a more important forum like the GC, when one could just as well post it elsewhere and get as many or more hits, is pretty attention-grabber-ish.

The reasoning isn't as complicated as "important things go in the GC." It's more along the lines of; We are not your billboard, advertisements are annoying, die in a fire.

I think once upon the time it was explicitly stated in the rules, but now it's just implied under the SPAM rule. Since well, advertising is SPAMing.

what if the advertisement in the PPP goes BEYOND spam? at other words, an advertisement that won't be even tolerated in the PPP?

Then it will be closed. But since "beyond spam" has not be defined, I have nothing to compare it against.

I don't think spam is the appropriate metric for that though.

I could post a link to a page with aborted fetuses because I think there's educational value, without warning you beforehand what's actually on the page. It's not spam, yet clearly shatters a couple rules.

Please unstickify this. This was already in the rules and there was no point in mentioning it again. You don't have to make an announcement every time you make the preparations to, you know, enforce our rules do you? Just take action.

It's not in the rules, and IIRC banning someone without explaining what you're doing or why you're doing it if it's not in something you told them to read is a bad idea

It used to be.

I know that for a fact. And everybody already knows it isn't allowed.

If you really want to let people know why they are banned, dispatch an email. And that's what the ban log is for also. There is really no need to clutter the GC up further with another sticky concerning common knowledge amongst the community.

Better yet, let's make it clear by updating the rules once again so everybody is happy.

Updating the rules sounds like a good idea.

Edit: And I didn't know it was disallowed.

Hey, uhhh, no. Not unstickying this for a little while until people absorb this.

Apparently not, which is why I posted this.

I've edited out and locked at least five advertisements in the past week and after banning someone for it people were up in arms. Again. I am simply enforcing an "official word from the mod."

Well shucks, it's a shame the GC has to be cluttered further for those of us (IE most of us) who already knew this and don't have to "absorb" it, huh?

Oh, right, of course, I can't make everyone happy.

This sticky saves me from headaches and some other people from the surprise of a suspension. It's important, and the people who don't know what's been presented here need to see it.

Why not just make announcements in the News Forum then? How about that forum actually gets some use?
