Koops' dad was probably stuck there with others who had been eaten, and they played Paper-Paper-Paper (the paper equivilant of Rock-Paper-Scissors) to see who got to live and who got to be eaten. Fortunately Koops' dad won every time (because paper beats paper, obviously).
