HERE COMES THE PAIN TRAIN
Basically, what Nova said.
1. Grayscale (that's the correct term btw; monochrome is black and white) tilesets are cool and all, but they become overused. Might I suggest trying LCD colors, or even red or something? I've seen that work out really cool :O
2. Don't dither. You're listening to the two hosts of the Spriting Workshop: people who have been spriting for a good time and know what they're doing. Dithering, unless done phenomenally right, makes the sprite look grainy and, quite frankly, like crap, especially on shiny surfaces such as pipes.
3. The pipes also need some more contrast. They're metal ffs. They're supposed to be shiny unless noted otherwise.
4. Pillow = big no. Pick and stick a lightsource, be it up, left, right, or even down.
so main point: If you "won't let go" of the dither, then I'm sorry but it's detracting from the look of the sprite and I'll be on my merry way.

along came Phage and spoiled my fun
I'll look into that.
Although, I so don't want to let go of the dither.
