But now that I think of it, we never really needed to reference that stuff. So I'm more for deleting them. But, if you take PK's logic (or lack there of) my earlier "lock them up somewhere public" idea works in HIS favour.

The vault is more for famous topics that should be locked while they're still good and fresh. Sort of.

You WANT them to stay, just so people who DO bump them can, and then you can go running to the admins with your diaper all wet about how it was bumped, so they can get in trouble and you can act like the angel.

Plus it should come by common sense to just not do it. This isn't an aquired skill. It's beyond pointless.

It doesn't really make a difference to me. If space was an issue, those topics would be deleted.

I don't really see the point in keeping them around, regardless. But every once in a while someone might want something for an older topic, so it might be good to leave them. I know sometimes I've looked back at old topics to get some information or something, but not often, and I've never had to do that when someone needed banning etc.

I think they get deleted automatically after a certain date, anyway. Or they did on the old board.

Well, on the board I admin, old topics usually get deleted after a time due to space issues.

How much space does MFGG have? I assume lots. Kritter once told me posts take up nothing, but attachments do.

How does 300mb sound, excluding attachments, certainly nothing to scoff at.

However. Penguinia comes with 3 gigs of space, and I've still got 2 1/2 to spare. So space is no concern.

As for the idea of archival, I don't see much point in doing so. If it's to prevent people from bumping old topics, they'll happily bump topics from wherever the threshold happens to fall, be it nine months, six months, three months, whatever. Deleting posts would probably be acceptable in the PPP, but it is sometimes useful to be able to reference older topics. I know I've had a few moments where I've remembered something posted many months previous, and had to look it up via search. And the whole idea of paper trail is kind of ridiculous. The only cases we've wanted a paper trail have been with banned members, and those usually end up in cave of flames anyway.

Would you rather delete old things or keep them? Cause once you delete them they can't be un-deleted.

I rather let them the way they are now :P
