Note that I haven't heard anything official at all about the Smash series being brought to the DS, but it has been speculated and drooled over by fans of the series since the DS was released. I was thinking about it today and began wondering what style they would use. Logic dictates they would maintain the use of 3D models for characters and most backgrounds, which has been the standard for all three games in the series, but personally I would hope they'd move it in a different direction for a DS release. Using a fully 2D style (i.e., all sprites, no models) would be interesting, though I think the best approach would be something similar to Paper Mario (3D models flattened to look 2D on 3D stages).

Any thoughts?

3D, like the others... though 2D on 3D might work better since the DS is only about as powerful as the N64

I'd prefer 3D to be honest, and it would save loads of time in the long run.

Also you missed the 3D on 2D like in NSMB - that could work.

Full 3D, considering all the possible poses characters could have, it would take up so much more space making tons and tons of tiles for each individual character. Using sprites would cut down on the fluidity of the animations, as well as take up more space which could be dedicated to sound effects, which seem to be lower in quality in some games.

Honestly? I don't care what the art style's like.

Just as long as Smash Bros. makes it to the DS, I'll be happy.

2D would be totally radical, so I'd want that. Though realistically, I'd only expect 3D.

Either 2-D on 3D or completely 2D. Why?

It seems like the series has abandoned the comic book-like art style used in artwork for the first game, but if they were to extend it to portables, I think they could work that sort of style back in and integrate it further into the in-game graphics. Maybe even put in some "POW!" effects for more the more hard-hitting attacks.

Neorice's mockups Rage posted gave me the urge to post an animated one.

Anyway I would expect to see it in 3D, with low poly models. Or even 2D characters in 3d landscapes.

But I would want it in full 2D.

wouldn't work, due to the DS's small screen size it wouldn't take much at all to kill or to be killed, unless they set the game to use health, you be on the top screen and a map be on the bottom, but that would really suck
