I think it would be the easiest to have it 3D.
That way they could use some stuff from the N64 one, give it new textures and a more Brawlish gameplay, add characters, modes and online and we have a good Smash DS.

I'd want it in 2D, because I've already got perfectly acceptable 3D versions on the consoles and it's hard not to enjoy well-done sprite work. Realistically though, I expect that if they ever do try to make it, it will be in 3D.

I'd say go for a reverse N64 route.

The characters and foreground are 2D sprites, but the background, items, Poké Ball Pokémon and such are 3D.

I'll say I'd prefer 2D just because it'd be nice to rip the sprites but I doubt it will be.
