I will be performing an upgrade of PHP and MySQL on the server tonight, once the Vz backup is completed. This is a significant upgrade and at minimum, the boards and site will be unavailable for several minutes -- longer if problems occur. If for some reason I can't get it working within a few hours, I will perform a rollback on the server.

Once the upgrade is completed, there is another significant problem that will need to be dealt with. IPB 1.3x has known compatibility problems with both PHP5 and MySQL 5. The obvious ones will be an easy catch because they are going to render the board unusable. But keep an eye out for other minor problems and please report them to me immediately.

I'd like for this to be as painless as possible, but there's going be a few jaggies in the process no matter what. IRC is a great place to hang out in the mean time!

Looking forward to it. I'd be on the IRC right now, but I'm using the Wii.

The upgrade is now complete (5 hours later ... zzzz)

Please keep an eye out for problems -- there is likely some broken compatibility.

So what exactly is this update supposed to do? Just make things faster?

I don't kno wif anyone else is getting this, but as an Opera user, when I left click an attachment, I'm getting the attachement open as plain text rather than a Open/Save dialog box. This has only happened since the upgrade. Not a big issue because I only need to hit the save button and add .zip to the end, but something small I had noticed. Anyone else getting this?

PHP5 and MySQL5 will have various bug fixes, security fixes, feature updates ...

PHP5 is what makes stuff go, and MySQL is what stores all the spam you guys post.

It's generally a good idea to keep the fundamentals of the site current, right?
