A suggestion.

I might come across as a jerk, but last time I was around when a debate forum was opened, it just lead to a sharp increase of bans, disagreements and other unpleasant things I did... really like, because I used to be a huge troll.

A place to have rational debates about subjects without the the people on the GC flaming and going off topic from the subject.

Having a debate in a place where the debate is ruined by flamers and people who go off topic, isn't fun.

See a few of us in that debate about feminism were actually having a debate while others came and ruined it causing tragic to lock it.

it's a fact that you're still dodging the question though; i asked what good a debate forum would bring to this place on the whole and you just went straight back to "well that's your opinion"

and having a "serious, rational argument" is not the problem, having a subforum for it is; take a look at bigger forums that have them and tell me, why would you want to bring that over here? kids going around in circles with "nuh-uh" "yuh-huh" "nuh-uh" "yuh-huh", people pointing out each other's grammar mistakes before researching arguments half the time, mods who think they're cool preemptively going "now now kids, play along, daddy's busy ordering pocky and torrenting hentai subs"; we could just avoid most of this by leaving debates in the GC, why attract it instead with a specialized debate forum?

Read that topic that got locked when we were debating about feminism.

It just seems people do not understand that people are having a debate, means its ratinal and serious.


Having a place specifically for that and while explaining what a debate is and how it's done would actually start up a place where intelligent and serious discussion can be encouraged and made.

Dude, that's how it is in the GC. That has been said about the GC atleast a few times.

Yet, we do not abide by it.

explaining "what a debate is" does a load of good for nothing; roundabout "yes-no-yes-no-yes-no" and "oh by the way you forgot to reference dictionary.com AND your high school grammar teacher!" are a huge load of stupid, but they're technically "serious" so who's to say they aren't fair game? "what a debate is" is not as objective or clear-cut as it sounds, and as soon as you try to define what constitutes a debate on the internet (which is pretty much necessary for a debate forum) you get a ton more people trying to weasel their way into semantics to defend their own stupid "YEAH WELL MY DAD CAN BEAT UP YOUR DAD" posts, and that certainly isn't what you or anyone wants

nobody loves how debate topics in the gc tend to turn stupid fast, but giving people a little playpen for them is hardly addressing the problem

Things will get out of control, this will result on a lot of banned members and a lot of banned members will turn other members into making topics saying how bad the rules are and how bad mods are,etc.
Anyway, Baconson people weren't debating about that feminist thing...and if they were you should consider how it ended up...locked, so you want a section for topics that will get locked?...dah.
Just leave it this way...and please don't say "that's just your opinion" because if you say that then my answer would be "why you made this topic then".

The first part I'll disagree. You are saying what might happen and not will happen, unless you have some definite proof that this will happen, stop. seriously.


As for the second part, what's your solution then?

again with "IT'S YOUR OPINION" over and over; i'm saying it's likely and you're saying it's not, why should i stop? sure makes me wonder why you posted this topic to begin with

and if you want a solution so bad then i refer you to this; it probably doesn't sound like the most obvious way to handle this "problem" but think about it: can a load of people who go DRAW ME DRAW ME really bring that much to the table in debates or... much of anything?

I'm not saying it's not likely, it's just you are predicting exactly whats going to happen with out even knowing if its exactly gonna happen.

Can you see the future? I doubt it.

I'm sure with the right setting a debate forum could work out.

That's kind of funny...you ask him if he can see the future and then you say you are sure that YOUR idea will work...can you see the future?
Well...This a debate...and I don't think is good...people get upset and they may go nutz.
It's just not good...

Well think about it, how do you know if it will work or not work, if we don't try.

Seeing as how the "debate" you gave as an example ended up it seems like it won't work.

EDIT:I just realized my posts seem kind of rude...sorry if I sound rude I just don't find another way to express what I mean.

Exactly, the point of having a debate forum is so we can put that debate in a setting where this would not happen.



Also I realized with the opening of the CCC if we make starting flames in or going off topic bannable, people would be more reluctant on attempting to do so since i'm sure alot of people here are being good so they can receive their HH badges.

I can safely say that a debate forum is the worst possible idea. Not only does it promote senseless flamewars and rebellion, nothing positive or constructive ever gets established, except drama and bans. This usually only applies to the internal issues of MFGG though.

and you're reading what you want to hear, so :)

you might want to have an idea of what you're talking about before you go around telling people they don't; there are much bigger and more tightly run forums than this one out there where debate halls have still easily turned into dens of stupidity, or can we just expect "WELL THAT'S YOUR OPINION" if we make the conclusion that this won't somehow stop anytime soon?

I'm for a board with the emphasis on more serious discussions.

Sure it may never have worked out in the past, that is guaranteed, but now with the new rules and if the guidelines are made well for debate forum, it has a good chance of being the opposite of what you are saying.

Anyways, yeah. I liked what Shyguy Grey said; we should atleast give it a try.

If we don't try then how will we know? I think we should have a test sub-forum. And if someone goes off topic/flames, ban them, if way too many people do it (like fourty people or so) then close it down and get on with our lives.

It's that simple.
