I thought there should be a topic to discuss the advantages/disadvantages of different programs we all use to make games.
I have only used Clickteam products (from knp to mmf2) and I had a go with RPG Maker 2k which I found too specific for me with little customization. I stick with Multimedia Fusion 2 but Gamemaker does look appealing as a lot of good things are being made with it lately. I've also used Delphi and VB.net but I want to keep this topic about the more graphical(Word? :S) programs out there.

So what advantages does the program you use have over other popular choices?

edit:Please don't discuss Stencyl in here either or anything else that isn't released yet. Thankyou.

I use Game Maker. When 7 came out I switched over to it immedeatly, but after SMCT, the rest of my projects will be with 6.1.

It's much much MUCH faster than 7, and the files take up less space.

Falcon Punch is the result of the Sun heating fists. It drives the Blue Falcon. Heating causes destruction of water into the pain, where it then hurts, creating rain. Rain creates flowing water in tears, which can then be converted into other forms through more pain.

I use Game Maker 7, I really liked Gamer Maker 6 better, but I use it because some of the things I use, require a "registered" program. I've also been looking into Blitz 3-D.

I went a game making camp where they used MMF2, so naturally I bought MMF2 and now use it.

GameMaker 7 Pro. If it weren't for Vista, I'd probably be still using 6.1 Pro.

I use GM because of the GML, which is close to Java and C++. I've had problems using Visual C++ so I stayed with GM.

6.2?

Anyways, I'm using GM7 because Vista and Vista compatibility. I'd probably still use GM6 if it weren't for that...

Reasons for GM: Only other program I ever used was RPG Maker series and I made some RPGs with it, but as the name of RPG Maker says, it's only for RPGs and not very customizable in terms of engine (which is the thing that I'm most interested in). So I use only GM now.
I've never tried MMF, but I guess it's just as powerful as GM, if not a bit more because it has all that cool stuff. Still I think MMF is probably not as customizable as GM and I also don't like the idea of having a folder of 1000 extensions to make good games with it.
As said, I've never tried MMF, so that's just a speculation of mine.

Hey I like GM6 too but I don't use GM7 at all. There are hardly any differences between them.

Anyone here actually tried both gamemaker and mmf2? I'd also like to know what differences there are between them but right now it's look like more a pointless battle of popularity. wink.gif

A new beta is out, click on the banner for more infomations.

An attempt to recreate mario bros 3's engine perfectly with some values taken directly from the rom and it is open source

Give it a try, even if it's open source, the levels are original and fun..

I've started a new topic because the other one died of inactivity. Don't let this one die.

Gameplay Video
Here's the last video, with the original 1-1 level and three new levels

I don't know much about the creation process of gamemaker but I've found that games made in MMF run a lot faster than games made in GM.
