Well, what kinds of sprites do you like (and hate) to see in fangames? A lot I have played have TERRIBLY CLASHING sprites.

I think people can pay TOO much attention to sprites sometimes, and that can scare off the n00bs. (NOT SMB3 & SMW YOU TWIT!)

In all honest I dislike seeing people use Nintendo sprites for EVERYTHING. Sure if you're doing a game in a style, use a sprite and a tile set here and there, but I really think people should develop new enemies and such for their games.

I use SMW for my backgrounds and YI for my characters, which is possible to do in my case mainly because Mario isn't in any of my games.

I really think the lack of art direction is a problem across the board, whether you rip everything or use entirely original sprites (which is of course ultra rare). You have to go for a consistent look to be taken seriously.

until you have used completely custom sprites that are totally unique, stylish, and DON'T SUCK then I don't give a flying **** about your sprites.


Sorry, not intended to be a flame at anyone. Just what I mean is, I hate hate HATE seeing people use ripped/edited sprites, even if it's SUPPOSED to be a fangame :B

I'm one who doesn't care about the sprites, just as long as the game is good. Many have followed SMW and SMB3 because they're simple, arrangable sprites. Well, that and we have the biggest set of custom mario power-ups in the MFGG-archive for SMB3.

I am really, really sick of SMB3 sprites. SMB2 needs more love, yes? Not only would it look different, but it'd also inspire more enemies than koopas and goombas.

In many cases, I can deal with seeing ripped/edited sprites, but it's nice to have new material thrown in. Super Mario Epic 2's edited/custom sprites used in the levels can be considered primitive by todays standards, but they added to the experience: Would you be more interested in going through a graveyard, a house with objects much bigger than Mario, or would you rather go through another generic grass land like you've seen before plenty of times over and over again?


Also: Super Mario World's Mario sprite is very much ugly. It looks off-model, the colors look off in more than one area, and Mario seems as if he's looking at you rather than the area in front of him much of the time. While I'm at it, quite A LOT of SMW wasn't very pretty. Want a nostalgia trip? Put Yoshi, Wiggler, the cape feather and other elements in with new sprites instead of just relying on the crappy graphical style.

And uniform styles are appreciated.

If people spend a little time editing some sprites such as SMB3 and SMW sprites, i wouldn't have reasons to complain about graphics.

But people are too lazy to do some minor edits or at least recoloring to the modern colors (because the SNES palette was a little limited, but Windows's one is not). Why they can't take some minutes to recolor/edit (or, overall speaking, "modernize") the sprite like, say, this example?

I really hate clashing sprites. I mean some sprites from different games can easily match, but mixing up...say...the Mario sprite from Super Mario Pinball and the Bowser sprite from SMRPG is way off.

A sprite like Mario's from Partners in Time and Kirby's sprite from Canvas Curse can easily match because they both have almost similiar qualities.
