Just say your opinions on what you think every good fangame should have.

For me, good levels, more than anything else. An engine without frequent glitches come close to second

A new beta is out, click on the banner for more infomations.

An attempt to recreate mario bros 3's engine perfectly with some values taken directly from the rom and it is open source

Give it a try, even if it's open source, the levels are original and fun..

I've started a new topic because the other one died of inactivity. Don't let this one die.

Gameplay Video
Here's the last video, with the original 1-1 level and three new levels

Interactivity.

It's rather obvious.

I second that one; that's what I'm trying to do in my fangame projects.

However, are you referring to like interactivity in the layout (like game instructions and such)?

Heres one that you almost never see:
REPLAYABILITY.

A majority of the fan-games today don't have something that makes you want to play them again.

No, I was more referring to the fact that you have to be able to play fangames. You should be able to control some aspect of it.

Y'know, sometimes some fancharacters can be good...

But anyway, I think volume controls are very important. That way I can actually play the game with sound without going deaf.

Every GOOD fangame should have an interesting aspect to it's playability, whether it be extreme speed, or a compelling story rivaling adult fiction, or just PORTALS.
I like innovation, comrade. And the great games have tons of innovation, but can control to the point where it's not a huge garbled mess (Thingio excluded.)

A sight to soothe sore eyes.
Seriously, sometimes fangames (and even official games) have horrid colour combonations, like THIS RED for a background. (seriously, even in LoZ the bright green dungeons and bright blue ones look horrible.)

Some new enemies that look or behave differently from ones in official games, especially if they're new custom types of enemies (which fit in correctly with the Mario theme, of course).

It is always better to do a new thing than doing a SMB3 clone.
Like a Mario bowling game...
