Well i got bellsouth dial-up (dsl/broadband not avaible where i live)
it is so...slow...
I tried getting rid of useless junk off the computer and it is still slow.

2)Also when im connected to the internet, no other programs work besides IE.

3)It sometimes shuts off for no reason, sometimes shutting the whole computer down(i scanned for viruses, it's not that)

4) Downloads are slow...like 300 bytes

5) IE freezes often

6) when i disconnect from internet, the whole computer restarts
_____________
I tried calling the help thingy for the bellsouth, and they are no help.
Please tell me how to solve any (1-6) of the problems above.

This sounds like a combination of your slow internet speed and a really crappy computer.

If you could post the specs of your computer, then we could determine this even more.

And I thought I was the only one with dial-up. 1 and 4 happen to me, but the others don't, so I think part of it is because of your computer.

Dialup is inherently slow.
I know what your going through as far as availability,

I myself actually had to have an internet satellite dish ordered because there are actually no forms of highspeed available locally.
Even with that, The lack of signal reflectors forces us to point it at an outer space satellite resulting in a 3 second delay.

I certainly cant say "Get this!" because it took me years to save enough for it.

*Ahem*
Sorry,
guess I got a bit carried away there.

I guess there is one thing that can be done about your connection speed.
What speed is your modem?
56K is the fastest a dialup modem can get.
However, if you have an older comp,
It may be likely that you have a slower modem.

As for your comp:
What exactly is it doing?

What Operating system do you have?

Do you have an Antivirus program?

As several people has suggested, post your computers specs, it could help a lot.

If I can suggest something, how about getting wireless (Not satellite) Internet, it goes at least as fast as ADSL were we live, is wireless available in your area at all?

Even the founder of this site has dial-up.

On topic: Your anti-spyware program may be crappy and unable to identify and/or eliminate the harmful software that loads your computer.

Wireless is impossible if there are no reflectors or a server within shooting range. cool.gif

If he's In an area like im in, His choices are slim.

Well i have Windows XP home edition
256 ram
56k modem
1.69 GHz
Celeron® CPU 1.70 GHz
It's a HP
I think about 60 GB harddrive
I'm not a computer specialist, so is that enough?

It's old too, so maybe thats the problem (got it 2001 so 6-7 years?)

Not old enough for 300 byte downloads. Consider backing up all your documents and software installers, and re-installing Windows. On HP PCs, you will find a recovery partition is in on your PC, making this dead easy to do. Press F11 or something when the PC first powers up.

computers dont slowdown from age.

it could be the cpu. Celeron stuff is not known for being well made, so it could be somewhat faulty, though I doubt it.

for the sound of #3 and #6 it sounds like your computer is not man enough to actual run the internet.

either that or your machine's running kinda hot. perhapses the internet's overheating it?

thats my thoughts on the situation.

Ignore this rubbish. Computers with internet slow down because of malware and updates, patches etc. I highly doubt your CPU is faulty. P3 PCs work fine on the internet if you set them up properly.

what I meant is that age alone cant slow down a computer.

did you read all of my post, hazmaster? sorry to sound rude, but I said I doubt that it is a faulty cpu.

you can get computers that can only run dos to get on the internet (with cable internet even).
I was more or less thinking of how much space was left on the drives. guess I should have worded that waaaaay better.

if your using over 90% of your drive or have a bunch of things running in he background that could be sucking up your available memory, thats what I meant by not being man enough to run the internet. I will be much more clear next time.

Ok, You know how to get into the hard drive?

Right click on the "Local Disk" and click on "Properties"
This will bring up a new window,

You will see a Pink and blue Pie,
Blue is used space,
Pink is not used.

It it is all blue, That means your hard drive is full.

Technically, age can slow down a computer because with age, a hard drive becomes less efficient.
