First
I have some e-Reader card files for SMA4 Rom. And there are some levels cards I want rename for quicker searches. But I've heard renaming some special programs like roms could screw it up. Is this true?

Second
Are fan-made roms/rom hacks legal/less illegal because they are way easier to finding and no doubt not made for a profit. I've heard different answers every time!

That'll be all ^_^

ROM Hacks are illegal because they are "unfair" use of other people's copyrighted engine design work. However, it is legal to post a patch that merges the changes you made to a ROM.

And fan-made (AKA "homebrew") ROMs are perfectly legal, as long as they are programmed by the homebrewer. (In a homebrewery???)

Unless they're based on a copyrighted idea and being sold for real money. That's just not cool.

Anyways, I'm not sure about the whole ROM renaming things, but you may want to make a copy of whatever it is you want to rename, then rename the not copy, then try it and see what happens. Let us know as I'm sure it'd be useful to us.

fan-made ROMs are illegal because they were modeled after (Or from) an actual game, and Nintendo fairly states at the beginning of its games that all scenarios and efforts are property of nintendo and are not to be stolen.

homebrew ROMs (AKA, games made for the emulator/game system that are not in any way alike to nintendo games) are perfectly legal as long as you don't sell them, mainly because you have to have a special copyright priveledge from nintendo before you can even consider getting a profit out of them.

IPS patches are your best bet right now, mainly because they haven't even been touched by nintendo yet. And that's not very far away folks.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

No, it's DUMPED ROMs that are illegal. If you program your own Mario game to run on a GBA, that's all fine and dandy as long as it's not sold. It's just like making a fangame except it doesn't run on a computer naturally.
