Has anyone ever wanted to make a game for themselves and so they just took an engine and added stuff so that they had something to amuse themselves? I often get bored and I want to make myself a game quickly, that's one of the main reasons I use engines.

I never use engines. I always make my games from scratch.

Downloading fan-games is a chance to compare other's abilities to your own. If it's not entirely your work I don't see the point in posting (Unless it's a team effort).

Engines should be a way to learn, not to steal.

well this has allways been a huge question.

but i like Engines (though i never really use them much, to lazy to download)

see if i wanna create this LTTP Game.
i wanna Build the world & i wanna create the bosses & new iteam's.
i Don't wanna spend a week making Link "Walk"

Basic programing is what turns allot of people off, so there ideas never become reall.

so Engines are good.
(like spriteing, people start with edits, and then they finaly learn customs)

I'd rather do my engines myself. It's more comfortable to work with.

If I make a game, I'll make the engine myself. You know absolutely how things work.

(However, I often end up messing things worse...)

Same.

The only time I've used an engine for anything, as far as I know, was to learn how to do some very basic things by looking at the Trisoft engine, back when I was just starting fangaming. But then I just used that how-to knowledge to program stuff of my own, so I didn't actually incorporate Trisoft engine coding into what I was making.

I don't use whole-game engines, but I do sometimes use engines for specific gameplay aspects if I can't figure out how to do it on my own.

You know once upon a time people would only download engines for advice on how to make your own... that's why they're in the How-tos section of the MFGG main site. Building games straight off someone else's engine was looked down on as practically stealing.

Yeah, I'm actually thinking sometime of actually using someone's engine, and completely changing everything, except the engine, to make such a different game that you don't even realize it's the same engine anymore.

that's right

i'm stealing an engine

Only when I want to make a quicky.

If I ever do, I will change most of the sprites to a similar style.

And if it all matches already, I'll change 'em anyway, so it looks different.

Falcon Punch is the result of the Sun heating fists. It drives the Blue Falcon. Heating causes destruction of water into the pain, where it then hurts, creating rain. Rain creates flowing water in tears, which can then be converted into other forms through more pain.

Some people are programming guys and some are level design guys. I'm a programming guy. Thus, I don't use engines.

For my first fangame I'm copying a lot off tutorials, to be honest, but I make sure I at least understand what all the tutorials mean before using what they say.

Now I'm almost at the point where I don't need them.

Almost.

Though I guess using tutorials doesn't exactly equal copying game engines...

Personally, I don't wish to directly copy an engine of a game, but I have no real objections towards the concept of other people doing it...provided they give proper credit and crap. I'm a "level design" guy, but I am having a lot of fun testing what I'm making too. Bug testing can be surprisingly...fun, sometimes. Depends on what you're testing out.

I used hello's smb1 engine, which is pretty basic and glitchy...

So yea, I changed it a LOT.

The end

Many times, but I keep those to myself.

If i'm making a serious game I always make my own engine though.
