I'm proud to be an Aussie but you don't see me selling Australian flags everytime there's some form of minor or major disaster, and you'd never catch me wearing a shirt with a big Australian flag on it. I live here and I see it often enough, I don't need to show other people that fact.
It's not hard to like your country without looking and acting stupid.
And SP, Wierdestchild is right, the image America has for itself is self loving and self centred, arrogant and overly patriotic, not to mention gun happy due to the constant "accidents" and friendly fire in Iraq a few months back. Chances are that's entirely untrue, but it doesn't mean people won't think that, and i'm not surprised some people want to get away from that image.
Oh, and one more thing. The American goverment has a habit of coming up with overly patriotic names for everything, like those Mars rovers...spirit and opportunity or something, and how about the "Freedom Tower" going up where the trade centre used to be??

Kritter, I can identify that this self image thing can be a well known aspect of Americans. Yet, I never like labeling anything as one single feature. I never have thought a show to be always funny, because I knew it could have it's bad episodes. Same with Nintendo, it doesn't always make good games. It's the same with people to me, and even if I'm overwhelmed by a certain type emotional feed back in a country I visit or hear about, there's no way I'm going to always assume such. But, of course, this is how I think, and you're entitled to your very own opinions, which I'm obliged to respect.
EDIT: As I reread my message, I feel like I'm focusing too much on one of your points and not your others. You have a wide range in ideas, and many of them I can agree with, yet with a sad tone.

Mars rovers, I have no problem with. That's Nasa, they had a robot called Tooth and another named after a famous African-American activist, they can do whatever the hell they want. But I agree, Freedom Tower is a horrible name. Rename it to French Tower.
|
But the British called their rover the Beagle! That's a much better name than something overly patriotic, and it's names like that which give a bad image. I've talked to loads of people about the rover names and everyone's always said "Pff, typical Americans" or something like that.

I never noticed it myself. I think the names aren't "GOD BLESS AMERICA FREEDOM FRIES". If they called them Liberty and Freedom, that would be stupid. But Spirit and Opportunity, two optomistic words about exploration not associated with beligerent patrioticness, no problem to me.

| QUOTE (KritTheRed @ Nov 7 2004, 06:47 AM) | | QUOTE (SonicProject @ Nov 7 2004, 01:39 AM) | | Bah, stereotypes. They're so stupid. If anyone had the image of being self-centered and arrogant, it'd be mankind in general. |
Yes, and America most of all. It's might be a stereotype, but its there until someone does something about it. Australians still have to live with being associated with Kangaroo's and silly Steve Irwin accents, even if most of us don't talk that way and only see Kangaroo's in a Zoo or as roadkill.
|
Stereotypes. They are mostly a reactant to how every human is reacting emotionally. Usually, in loose situations where you feel comfortable in, you can make a stereotypical joke and not care. However, someone who hears this can take offense, and depending on their own emotions, can either take it in silently or exploit it in anger. With this factor, they have become just like cuss words, where while popular in use, they have a general sense of being publicly forbidden. And sadly, this includes the final factor, where since people know it's "forbidden," thusly unsual, people use them in emotions unsual to themselves like anger, where they prove themselves with such, while hurting another. It is just another example of human imperfection.

Man, I'm a first-gen American and still have to suck up this crap and deal with it, 'cause things are no better back in Africa.
And yes, naming the new WTC towers the Freedom Tower(s) is is ridiculous. Same goes for fries and toast.
Additionally, we as Americans are never gonna lose our assholish image because we're always prone to stereotyping (all Asians are Chinese, the French are gay, Brits have bad teeth, yadda yadda yadda), and we're generally too stupid to realize when we've made a mistake and apologize for it.
And before anyone attacks me, NO I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE ELECTION.

Speaking of stereotyping, since I'm Australian almost every non-Australian thinks I have kangaroos in my backyard. I DON'T! We had kangaroos that jumped around during the night at survival camp and kept us up. And since my heritage is Italian and people think were part of the Mafia, & think we all have relatives named Mario and Luigi. One of my relatives was named Mario.. and we have some distant realtive called Luigina (a girl).

| QUOTE | November 6, 2004, 7:11 PM EST
Distraught over the re-election of President George W. Bush, a Georgia man traveled to New York City, went to Ground Zero and killed himself with a shotgun blast, police said yesterday.
The suicide victim, Andrew Veal, 25, was discovered just before 8 a.m. yesterday when a worker for the Millennium Hotel looking at Ground Zero from an upper floor saw a man lying atop the concrete structure through which the 1 and 9 subway lines run.
The worker, thinking the man was sleeping, alerted colleagues and the Port Authority police were notified.
But when they got to Veal's body, they realized he had killed himself with a shot to the head from a .12-gauge shotgun.
No suicide note was found, but according to a Port Authority police source, family members said Veal, a registered Democrat, was despondent over Bush's defeat of Sen. John Kerry. A second source said Veal, who lived in Athens, Ga., and worked for the University of Georgia, was also adamantly opposed to the war in Iraq |
