Pretty much Sprites. Plain Text is for a HUD is just EWW.
Or, you can use text, and make it look purty to use, but that's pretty hard to pull off.

If I have to choose between sprites and text, I'd say text.
But when you say sprites, I guess you mean text WITH sprites..
So I say sprites. Because it's more overviewable if you have little icons next to the numbers.

text with, at the most, a couple of small icons useful for saving space

a lot of sprite-filled HUDs are ass-ugly, and a giant HUD wastes screen space

No HUD is better.

Sprites so you can make it fade out most of the time.

Depends on many things. Fonts is usually better, but if you are using a lot of it at once and you are using Game Maker or something similar, sprites is better because it is faster. Also, non-transparent sprites are faster than transparent.

To be honest this makes no sense, a Good hud has both sprites and text. see SMW.

Exactly the same thing I was thinking about. Just as long as the vital information is there like health meter, lives (and time limit for each stage, if the game itself overall has one).
