What are the big red "!" blocks in front of some topics in the News forum for?

I've never seen them until now, and when I hover the mouse over a couple of them, they say that the topics have been reported 1 time(s).

So fill me in, please.

It was part of an old system we had implemented for Super Reporters. They got the Orange Exclamation point badge, and topics they reported would be flagged with the big Red ! Block. Klobber was the only one to get this badge, and it was discontinued immediately after. Then he became admin again.

I think the reason we never went through with it is that it was the equivalent of being Hall Monitor: everyone knows you're the tattletale and beats you up under the metaphorical jungle gym of life.

Not sure why that topic has that.

Skeletal fragments of a feature that never went into mainstream use.

good thing it was shut off because every single topic around here would have one of those icons just because someone said "ass"

Not sure why that topic has that.

Sounds like something that went out of use long ago, before the News Forum was even created.

Do you suppose one of the admins did that just for the sake of a mystery - to make people wonder until it was explained?

EDIT:

But he said only Super Reporters' reports would cause the topics to be flagged with the block.

Oh the news forum was around then, just in a totally and completely different form that resembled post-Katrina New Orleans.

Well, none of the present topics were in it then, correct?
